In the gendoc infrastructure, using an assignment of the form
FOO = docs/$(1)/bar
inside GENDOC_INNER does not work as expected: the $(1) value is empty here
and the value of FOO becomes 'docs//bar'.
Parameters $(2), $(3), etc. do not have this problem. The specific thing
about $(1) is that it is a parameter to GENDOC itself (indicating the
document to create) and passed transparently to GENDOC_INNER.
This is different from the package infrastructures, where $(1) is set from
$(pkgname). In fact, the same strategy could be used by the gendoc
infrastructure as well, as $(pkgname) resolves to 'manual' for file
docs/manual/manual.mk. This has the advantage that the described problem
does not occur.
Note that this means that if we want to use the same GENDOC infrastructure
for another document, it will have to reside in a separate directory than
the manual.

As reported in bug #7172 [0], setting BR2_TARGET_LDFLAGS to a value
containing a $ sign can lead to unexpected results.
This is because it is very hard to know when the $ sign gets evaluated:
- in the Buildroot-level make
- in the shell called by the Buildroot-level make
- in the package's own build-system, either at configure time, in the
Makefile, in a shell in the Makefile...
So, it is very difficult to know how much escaping that would need.
A proposal is to use a shell variable to pass such values unmolested.
But it is not that simple either, since it still contains a $ sign, and
there is not much certainty as to when it would be evaluated.
Instead, just document this limitation, both in the help text for
BR2_TARGET_LDFLAGS, and in the known-issues section in the manual.
Does not really fix#7172, but at least the limitation is documented.

The inner-xxx-targets in the buildroot package infrastructures are
evaluated using $(eval) which causes variable references to be a bit
different than in regular make code. As we want most references to be
expanded only at the time of the $(eval) we should not use standard
references $(VAR) but rather use double dollar signs $$(VAR). This includes
function references like $(call), $(subst), etc. The only exception is the
reference to pkgdir/pkgname and numbered variables, which are parameters to
the inner block: $(1), $(2), etc.
This patch introduces consistent usage of double-dollar signs throughout the
different inner-xxx-targets blocks.
In some cases, this would potentially cause circular references, in
particular when the value of HOST_FOO_VAR would be obtained from the
corresponding FOO_VAR if HOST_FOO_VAR is not defined. In these cases, a test
is added to check for a host package (the only case where such constructions
are relevant; these are not circular).
Benefits of these changes are:
- behavior of variables is now again as expected. For example, setting
$(2)_VERSION = virtual in pkg-virtual.mk will effectively work, while
originally it would cause very odd results.
- The output of 'make printvars' is now much more useful. This target shows
the value of all variables, and the expression that led to that value.
However, if the expression was coming from an inner-xxx-targets block, and
was using single dollar signs, it would show in printvars as
VAR = value (value)
while if double dollar signs are used, it would effectively look like
VAR = value (actual expression)
as is intended.
This improvement is for example effective for FOO_DL_VERSION, FOO_RAWNAME,
FOO_SITE_METHOD and FOO_MAKE.
The correctness of this patch has been verified using 'make printvars',
'make manual' and 'make legal-info' before and after applying this patch,
and comparing the output.

There will soon be new options to the graph-depends script, which we
can only sanely pass via environment variables.
Currently, we use such an environment variable to pass the maximum depth
of the dependency graph; the name of that variable is explicit that it
contains just the depth.
However, there has been so far no release of Buildroot which would make
use of that variable, so no user should have come to rely on it.
Rename that variable so it is less specific, and more generic, so it can
be used to pass more options to graph-depends.

For asciidoc, a string like '+these are some words+' will be displayed in
monospace font. Such sequences are identified by searching for a matching
pair of + signs in the same block.
The string 'C++' also contains such + signs. In most cases, this does not
pose a problem and no escaping is necessary. However, if 'C++' occurs twice
in the same block, the + signs will be matched to each other, and asciidoc
formats all text between them as monospaced text. In this case, escaping of
one of these 'C++' occurances is necessary to get the right formatting.
In one place of the manual, there is a sentence that causes such a problem:
"you only have to tell whether your toolchain supports C++ or not and
whether it has built-in RPC support. If your external toolchain uses
the 'uClibc' library, then you have to tell Buildroot if it supports
largefile, IPv6, RPC, wide-char, locale, program invocation, threads
and C++."
Commit 082dec8ce4 was based on a patch fixing
this problem in one place of the manual, but was incorrectly changed while
committing.

problem correctly.

Asciidoc supports two syntaxes for section titles: two-line titles (title
plus underline consisting of a particular symbol), and one-line titles
(title prefixed with a specific number of = signs).
The two-line title underlines are:
Level 0 (top level): ======================
Level 1: ----------------------
Level 2: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Level 3: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Level 4 (bottom level): ++++++++++++++++++++++
and the one-line title prefixes:
= Document Title (level 0) =
== Section title (level 1) ==
=== Section title (level 2) ===
==== Section title (level 3) ====
===== Section title (level 4) =====
The buildroot manual is currenly using the two-line titles, but this has
multiple disadvantages:
- asciidoc also uses some of the underline symbols for other purposes (like
preformatted code, example blocks, ...), which makes it difficult to do
mass replacements, such as a planned follow-up patch that needs to move
all sections one level down.
- it is difficult to remember which level a given underline symbol (=-~^+)
corresponds to, while counting = signs is easy.
This patch changes all two-level titles to one-level titles in the manual.
The bulk of the change was done with the following Python script, except for
the level 1 titles (-----) as these underlines are also used for literal
code blocks.
This patch only changes the titles, no other changes. In
adding-packages-directory.txt, I did add missing newlines between some
titles and their content.

Some packages need a host-python interpreter with a version different
from the one installed in the target to run some build scripts (eg.
scons requires python2 to run, to build any kind of packages even if
the python interpreter selected for the target is python3).
In such cases, we need to add the right host-python dependency to the
package using the host-python-package infrastructure, and we also want
to invoke the right host python interpreter during the build steps.
This patch adds a *_NEEDS_HOST_PYTHON variable that can be set either
to 'python2' or 'python3'. This variable can be set by any package
using the host-python-package infrastructure to force the python
interpreter for the build. This variable also takes care of setting
the right host-python dependency.
This *_NEEDS_HOST_PYTHON variable only affects packages using the
host-python-package infrastructure.
If some configure/build/install commands are overloaded in the *.mk
file, the right python interpreter should be explicitly called.
If the package defines some tool variable (eg.: SCONS), the variable
should explicitly call the right python interpreter.

Currently, the manual states that if you send a series and include a
changelog in the introduction mail (0 of x), it is not necessary to include
a changelog on the individual patches.
This is not always convenient: for large patch series it requires going back
to the introduction mail when opening each patch, to understand what
changed.

Using a relative path for O=... has limitations, since it is interpreted
relative to the Buildroot tree, and thus may lead to unexpected results.
For example, running this:

sub-directory of the Buildroot tree, here in buildroot/my-O

This commit introduces the BR2_EXTERNAL environment variable, which
will allow to keep Buildroot customization (board-specific
configuration files or root filesystem overlays, package Config.in and
makefiles, as well as defconfigs) outside of the Buildroot tree.
This commit only introduces the variable itself, and ensures that it
is available within Config.in options. This allows us to use
$BR2_EXTERNAL in a 'source' statement in Config.in.
Following patches extend the usage of BR2_EXTERNAL to other areas
(packages and defconfigs).
In details, this commit:
* Introduces the BR2_EXTERNAL Kconfig option. This option has no
prompt, and is therefore not visible to the user and also not
stored in the .config file. It is automatically set to the value of
the BR2_EXTERNAL environment variable. The only purpose of this
BR2_EXTERNAL Kconfig option is to allow $BR2_EXTERNAL to be
properly expanded when used inside Kconfig source statements.
* Calculates the BR2_EXTERNAL value to use. If passed on the command
line, then this value is taken in priority, and saved to a
.br-external hidden file in the output directory. If not passed on
the command line, then we read the .br-external file from the
output directory. This allows the user to not pass the BR2_EXTERNAL
value at each make invocation. If no BR2_EXTERNAL value is passed,
we define it to support/dummy-external, so that the kconfig code
finds an existing $(BR2_EXTERNAL)/package/Config.in file to
include.
* Passes the BR2_EXTERNAL into the *config environment, so that its
value is found when parsing/evaluating Config.in files and .config
values.

Python saves a pre-compiled support/scripts/kconfiglib.pyc file
side-to-side with the corresponding .py file.
This does not work if the Buildroot source tree is read-only (but
this is not an error for Python, which keep going OK).
But this may cause issues for out-of-tree builds in case the same
Buildroot source tree is shared by many builds.
Also, 'make clean' currently does not clean this file, and out-of-tree
builds can remove it either, at the risk of causing issues for other
out-of-tree builds running at the same time.
Just tell Python not to generate .pyc files:
- call the script via python, don't use the sha-bang
- thus, make the script non-executable, and remove the sha-bang

do sanity checks on installed files...

Converting the external toolchain logic into a package raises a very
special use case that wasn't handled by the package infrastructure:
the Blackfin toolchain is delivered as two tarballs instead of
one. Unfortunately <pkg>_SOURCE only allows to pass one tarball name.
However, we really want both tarballs to be known by the package
infrastructure, so that the normal 'source' and 'external-deps'
mechanism work fine.
In order to achieve this, we add a <pkg>_EXTRA_DOWNLOADS variable,
which allows a package to list other stuff it would like to see
downloaded, but that are otherwise not used by the package
infrastructure itself: it is up to the package to do it by itself.

In case there are many arguments passed to the tools, the command line
can get very long, and difficult to parse visually.
For example, the Linux kernel passes a lot of arguments to gcc (at least
45, which gives 53 with our hard-coded args). Looking at such a command
line is daunting.
So, add the possibility to print each argument on its own line.
Also, enclose all args between single quotes, so the command line
can be safely copy-pasted without special chars (spaces, $) being
inrerpreted by the shell.

otherwise, apply package/<pkg>/*.patch
* For patches stored in the global patches directory, if
$(GLOBAL_PATCH_DIR)/<pkg>/<version>/ does exist, apply
$(GLOBAL_PATCH_DIR)/<pkg>/<version>/*.patch, otherwise, apply
$(GLOBAL_PATCH_DIR)/<pkg>/*.patch

This commit renames the newly introduced <pkg>_CONFIG_FIXUP variable
to <pkg>_CONFIG_SCRIPTS, for two reasons:
* <pkg>_CONFIG_SCRIPTS will not only "fixup" the scripts in
$(STAGING_DIR)/usr/bin, but also remove them from
$(TARGET_DIR)/usr/bin. So it is not only about doing a "fixup".
* On the principle, it is strange that the variable carries an
indication of the action that will take place on those files. It
should rather be named to say "Here are the <foo>-config scripts",
and let the package infrastructure decide if it should fix them up,
remove them, etc.
This commit also updates the documentation accordingly.

Store BR2_DEFCONFIG in .config, and use it to update the original input
defconfig file after updating the configuration. When a config is
created by using the BR2_DEFCONFIG=... option, this is saved in the
.config file; later runs of savedefconfig will update that same location.
It is also possible to configure this place in the interactive
configuration.
The BR2_DEFCONFIG value itself is not saved into the generated
defconfig, since Kconfig considers it at its default. This is
intentional, to avoid hard-coding an absolute path in the defconfig.
It will anyway be set again when the defconfig is used with the
'make BR2_DEFCONFIG=... defconfig' command.
As a side-effect of this change, the *config options have been moved out
of the BR2_HAVE_DOT_CONFIG condition. This doesn't make any functional
difference, because the .config is still not read for the *config targets.
However, the defconfig and savedefconfig targets do need to include
.config now, which makes them slightly slower.

This patch will add <pkg>_CONFIG_FIXUP variable to buildroot infra.
It's purpose is to inform buildroot that the package in question
contains some $(STAGING_DIR)/usr/bin/*-config files and that we
want to automatically fix prefixes of such files.
It is often the case that many packages call these
files during their configuration step to determine 3rd party
library package locations and any flags needed to link against them.
For example:
Some package might try to check the existense and linking flags
of NSPR package by calling $(STAGING_DIR)/usr/bin/nspr-config --prefix.
Without this fix. NSPR would return /usr/ as it's prefix which is
wrong when cross-compiling.
Correct would be $(STAGING_DIR)/usr.
All packages that have <pkg>_INSTALL_STAGING = YES defined and
also install some config file(s) into $(STAGING_DIR)/usr/bin must
hereafter also define <pkg>_CONFIG_FIXUP with the correspondig
filename(s).
For example:
DIVINE_CONFIG_FIXUP = divine-config
or for multiple files:
IMAGEMAGICK_CONFIG_FIXUP = Magick-config Wand-config

Support scripts (in support/) may need to parse the .config file, so give
them an easy access to it, by exporting BUILDROOT_CONFIG with the fully-
qualified path to .config.
Also, post-build scripts may need to reference a few locations, so export
those, too.
Note: we export both O and BASE_DIR. Although they are the same, BASE_DIR
is used internally, while O is used on the command line, which makes it a
bit ambiguous to know which to use. As users use O= on the command line,
they will probably tend to use that in their post-build scripts.

And the 'depends on' vs. 'select' issue is already covered in a later
section, see

This commit adds a new section
Working with Buildroot
-> Details in configuration
-> Cross-compilation toolchain
that gives a lot of details about our three toolchain backends. It
takes some elements that were previously later in the manual in
"Embedded basics" and in "External toolchain" and combines them with
more details about internal backend and Crosstool-NG backend.
The "Embedded basics" section becomes empty and is therefore
removed. A few elements have been lost in the process, but they were
considered to not be really useful, especially located so far in the
manual.

As discussed with Samuel Martin, there are a few questions about some
Buildroot configuration aspects that come very often on the IRC
channel and on the mailing-list. Topics such as the /dev management
and init systems are often raised.
Therefore, this patch adds a new section that provides details about
the Buildroot configuration possibilities. It does not aim at
replacing the help text of each configuration option, but rather to
complement them by providing more background. Having those
informations in the manual will also make it easier for us to point
newcomers to the right place in the documentation when they have
questions.
Note that this section will replace the "Embedded basics" section that
comes way too late in the manual. This is done in a followup commit.

The depends-on-vs-select part of the manual really deserves its own
section title (especially because it is referred to and the xref gets
a 'sinpara' in PDF if the section doesn't have a title). So restructure
the surrounding sections to reduce the section nesting depth.

The new skeleton of the manual as it has been thought:
1. About Buildroot:
Presentation of Buildroot
2. Starting up:
Everything to quickly and easily start working with Buildroot
3. Working with Buildroot
Basics to make your work fitting your needs
4. Troubleshooting
5. Going further in Buildroot's innards
Explaination of how buildroot is organised, how it works, etc
6. Developer Guidelines
7. Getting involved
8. Contibuting to Buildroot
9. Legal notice
10. Appendix
It is easy to distinguish two parts in this plan:
- Sections 1 to 4 mainly address people starting with Buildroot
- Sections 5 to 10 are more focused on how to develop Buildroot itself
Most of the existing sections have just been moved in the hierarchy,
few were split and dispatch in, what i think was the relevant section,
and numerous others have been created.

This directory groups the following elements:
* the default root filesystem skeleton
* the default device tables
* the Config.in options for system configuration (UART port for
getty, system hostname, etc.)
* the make rules to apply the system configuration options
Even though the skeleton and device tables could have lived in fs/, it
would have been strange to have the UART, system hostname and other
related options into fs/. A new system/ directory makes more sense.
As a consequence, this patch also removes target/Makefile.in, which
has become useless in the process.

The configuration cache shared between packages, while being in
principle a nice idea to speed-up the configuration of packages by
avoiding repetitive identical checks, turned out to be unreliable due
to the subtle differences between similar but not identical checks in
different packages. After spending some time trying to fix those, we
concluded that supporting the shared configuration cache is definitely
too hard and too unreliable, and that we'd better get rid of it
altogether.
This patch therefore removes the shared configuration cache
infrastructure and usage.
