Traditional VT-10x terminals (and their emulators) [0] have a "magic
margins" feature that enables the last character position to be updated
without scrolling the screen: whenever a character is printed on the
last column, the cursor stays over the character, instead of moving to
the next line.
The Busybox shell, ash, attempts to defeat this feature by printing
CR,LF right after echoing a character to the last column.[1] This
doesn't play well with emulator.py. The run() method of the Emulator
class captures the output of the emulated system and assumes the first
line it reads is the echo of the command, and all subsequent lines are
the command's output. If the line made by the command + shell prompt is
longer than 80 characters, then it is echoed as two or more lines, and
all but the first one are mistaken for the command's output.
We fix this by telling the emulated system that we are using an
ultra-wide terminal with 29999 columns. Larger values would be ignored
and replaced by the default, namely 80 columns.[2]

When booting under EFI, grub2 will output a nice and shiny boot menu,
using extended ASCII characters (in the [0x80..0xFF] range), namely
CP437 [0], on the assumption that the VGA BIOS is a real one and has the
corresponding (and only!) font, as is the case on real hardware.
However, when run in our runtime test infrastructure, this triggers the
infamous python UnicodeDecodeError exception:

Grub2 is not wrong in emitting those chars, and basically we should not
expect the packages we test to always emit correct UTF-8 sequences; at
the very least, this should not cause the test infra to fail.
We fix that by telling pexpect.spawn to "fix" such invalid sequences by
replacing them with the suitable Unicode character, U+FFFD REPLACEMENT

When Grub2 is build it is configured only for one boot set-up, BIOS Legacy,
EFI 32 bit or EFI 64 bit. It can not deal with several boot set-up on the
same image.
This patch allows to build Grub2 for different configurations simultaneously.
To cover Grub2 configuration of legacy BIOS platforms (32-bit), 32-bit EFI
BIOS and 64-bit EFI BIOS in the same build, multi-build system felt much more
reasonable to just extend the grub2 package into 3 packages.
We can no longer use autotools-package as a consequence of this multi-build, and
we have to resort to generic-package and a partial duplication of
the autotools-infra. Grub2 was already using custom option like --prefix or
--exec-prefix so this won't add much more weirdness.
We use a GRUB2_TUPLES list to describe all the configurations selected.
For each boot case described in the GRUB2_TUPLES list, it configures and
builds Grub2 in a separate folder named build-$(tuple).
We use a foreach loop to make actions on each tuple selected.
We have to separate the BR2_TARGET_GRUB2_BUILTIN_MODULES and the
BR2_TARGET_GRUB2_BUILTIN_CONFIG for each BIOS or EFI boot cases.

This commit bumps the python-smmap2 and python-gitdb2 packages in
lockstep, as the new version of gitdb2 requires a newer version of
smmap2, but the current version of gitdb2 cannot work with the newer
version of smmap2 (sigh).
Also, upstream the projects have been renamed: gitdb2 is now named
gitdb on PyPi (see https://pypi.org/project/gitdb2/) and smmap2 is now
named smmap (https://pypi.org/project/smmap2/). However, to avoid
needless churn, we don't rename the Buildroot packages, but that
rename is visible in the name of the tarballs being downloaded.
Also, since version 4.0.0, smmap supports only Python 3.x, so we add a
dependency on Python 3.x and drop the test case of gitdb2 on Python
2.x.

the filesystem image had to pre-exist, or mkfs.ext2 would fail to

The regression was fixed upstream, and is now part of the 1.46.4

Additionally, as noticed by Romain, the defaults settings for generating
"small" filesystems have changed: the inode size has been increased fom
128 to 256 bytes in 1.46.4 [0]. This causes the number of inodes to
diverge slightly from the requested number; instead of 8 more inodes,
there are now 8 fewer than requested.
Adapt our test accordingly.

Add this missing depenency now.
Additionally, the associated test had an explicit host pkgconf enbled in
its configuration. This is superfluous now that uboot properly depends
on host-pkgconf, so drop that from the test.
Note: it hapenned to work, because host-pkgconf, when explicitly enabled
in the configuration, and without per-package directories, would build
before uboot and thus be available. This would fail with PPD, though,

Commit 3cf2782906 (support/testing/infra/emulator.py: update pre-built
kernels) bumped the default kernels used by the testing infra.
However, the newer armv7 kernel (at least) no longer has support for
lz4-compressed squashfs filesystems.
This breaks the squashfs test:
Filesystem uses "lz4" compression. This is not supported
List of all partitions:
1f00 131072 mtdblock0
(driver?)
1f01 32768 mtdblock1
(driver?)
b300 2048 mmcblk0
driver: mmcblk
No filesystem could mount root, tried:
squashfs
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(179,0)
Updating the kernel again is a little bit cumbersome, while fixing the
actual test is relatively trivial, so this is what we do: we switch
over to lzo, which is supported by the new kernel:
# zcat /proc/config.gz |grep SQUA
CONFIG_SQUASHFS=y
CONFIG_SQUASHFS_ZLIB=y
# CONFIG_SQUASHFS_LZ4 is not set
CONFIG_SQUASHFS_LZO=y
# CONFIG_SQUASHFS_XZ is not set
While at it, also drop the superfluous line disabling gzip compression:
it is part of a choice, so enabling one (lzo here) forcibly disables the
others (of which gzip).

two. While some filesystem (such as ext2/3/4) allow to specify the
expected size of the filesystem, others such as SquashFS do not have
this capability.
We were already extending the size of such images to the next 1 MB
boundary using "truncate -s %1M", but that is no longer sufficient. So
instead, we introduce a helper function that extends the size of an
image to the next power of two.

Since Qemu 5.1, the SD card size must be a power of two, so the
default size for ext2/3/4 filesystem images of 60 MB is not
suitable. Since 16 MB is used for the Ext4 test, let's use the same
value for the other tests as well (ext2, ext2r1, ext3). Without this
change, the ext2, ext2r1 and ext3 simply fail to run under Qemu >=
5.1.

Bump U-Boot version in TestATFAllwinner. Updating U-Boot version to
2021.04 requires the following two changes.
First, after switching to binman, u-boot.itb is no more generated for
64-bit sunxi boards. Combined u-boot-sunxi-with-spl.bin image should
be used instead. This image contains SPL, U-Boot, and FIT image,
where FIT image contains other binaries such as BL31 and SCP.
Second, new U-Boot enables support for System Control Processor (SCP)
firmware. SCP firmware is included by default into FIT image in the
combined u-boot-sunxi-with-spl.bin binary. When SCP is not available
or not needed, it should be explicitly disabled by pointing to an
empty file. Support for Allwinner SCP firmware is not yet available
neither in Buildroot nor in mainline kernel. So disable it for now
using custom U-Boot build options.

FOO_CPE_ID_VALID really ought to be an internal implementaion detail.
Packages that really want to trigger their CPE defintitions really
should set one of the actual variables to a meaningful value.
There are two CPE-related variables that we could chose to set to
replace FOO_CPE_ID_VALID: FOO_CPE_ID_VENDOR and FOO_CPE_ID_PRODUCT.
Between those two, _VENDOR more often diverges from the default than
_PRODUCT does, so that's what we use.

Switch to using the tarball helper, that can generate reproducible
archives whatever the tar version >= 1.27.
However, those archives are not identical to the previous ones generated
in the (now-broken) gnu format.
To avoid any clashing between old and new archives, and new and old
Buildroot versions, we need to name the new generated archives
differently from the existing ones.
So, we bump the git-specific format-version to -br1.
The %ci date has been supported by git back to 1.6.0, released August
2008); it is not strictly ISO8601, but is still accepted as a PAX date
header. The strict ISO8601 placeholder, %cI, was only introduced with
2.2.0, release in November 2014, so too recent to be widely available.
As the format and the names of the archives changes, we need to update
all the hash files with the new names and hashes.
Of all the bootloaders that have a git download method, vexpress-firmware
is the only one to have a hash. Others have no hash files, or they have
explicitly set BR_NO_CHECK_HASH_FOR.
For the packages, linux-headers is the special snowflake, as the git
download is only for custom git tree, so it is excluded from the hash
verification with BR_NO_CHECK_HASH_FOR.

When it was applied, commit 243d500f8d (support/testing: add openssh
runtime test) was amended to not provide a NIC to the emulated machine,
as the test did not require access to the outer world: it only uses the
lo interface. Also, there was a discrepancy between the NIC name in the
Buildroot configuration, and the drivers available in our default kernel
image, making the boot hang for a while whaiting for a NIC that would
never come.
However, that tweak was tested locally with a qmeu version more recent
than the one available in our buidroot/base Docker image. As a
consequence, that test fails to run in gitlab-ci.
Revert to using the old way of specifying no network: it works on

Buildroot currently installs openjdk-bin to $(HOST_DIR)/ instead of the more
traditional (for java installations) $(HOST_DIR)/usr/lib/jvm.
As described in https://bugs.busybox.net/show_bug.cgi?id=13001
"Openjdk-bin provides it's own libfreetype.so and places it into
$(HOST_DIR)/lib/. This library causes build failures with the
host-xapp_mkfontscale package due to the overwritten libfreetype.so.
mkfontscale.o: In function `doDirectory':
mkfontscale.c:(.text+0x1a80): undefined reference to `FT_Get_BDF_Property'
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
Reproducing the error is done by repeating the following steps.
make host-freetype
make host-openjdk-bin
make host-xapp_mkfontscale"
There are two options for fixing this problem:
1) add host-freetype and host-lksctp-tools as dependencies to host-openjdk-bin
and then remove the provided libfreetype.so and libsctp.so libraries
in a post_extract_hook.
2) change the installation directory from $(HOST_DIR)/ to
$(HOST_DIR)/usr/lib/jvm just like the target OpenJDK package and
copy the entire source directories contents to the above location.
The second option provides the following advantages:
- the directory structure is consistent with how we handle the target OpenJDK.
- the HOST_OPENJDK_BIN_INSTALL_CMDS step is simplified.
- packages such as Maven require directories of which we are currently not
copying. These missing directories cause programs such as Maven to crash
when running with an error such as
"Can't read cryptographic policy directory: unlimited."
- does not miss any other libraries that solution 1 would not cope with
(e.g. libzip.so from host-libzip, or libnet.so from not-yet existing
host-libnet, or libsctp.so from not-yet existing host-lksctp-tools)
Because the second option is both simple, easier to implement, is low-impact,
and fixes the problems described above wholly, it is the best to implement.
To implement the above changes, we must also modify the following files in the
same patch to match the host's new directory paths:
- openjdk.mk
- openjdk-jni-test.mk
- openjdk-hello-world.mk
To avoid having to change all those packages in the future, expose two
new variables, HOST_OPENJDK_BIN_ROOT_DIR which contains the path where
the openjdk-bin was installed in, and JAVAC, which contains the path to
the javac compiler (modeled after the way the autoconf et al. variables
are set and exposed).
Tested with:
./support/testing/run-tests -o out -d dl tests.package.test_openjdk.TestOpenJdk

As of upstream commit 735eb608637e7bbab4082a541ac802cc919fec22,
available since version v20.1.1, support for Python 2.x has been
dropped, and Python >= 3.5 is required. So we make python-txaio depend
on python3, and remove the python2 test of python-txaio.
We also remove the python-six dependency which is no longer used by

This patch add a new check in order to stop the test if one
of the provided symbol is missing. This must be treated as error.
For example, if a symbol disapear due to new dependency constraints.

The config is missing the following packages:
- BR2_PACKAGE_GST1_PLUGINS_BASE
This is needed for the videotestsrc plugin which provides
videotestsrc.
- BR2_PACKAGE_GST1_PLUGINS_BAD
This is needed for the debugutils plugin which provides
fakevideosink.
- BR2_PACKAGE_GST1_PLUGINS_BASE_PLUGIN_VIDEOTESTSRC
videotestsrcplugin used by the example pipeline.
- BR2_PACKAGE_GST1_PLUGINS_BAD_PLUGIN_DEBUGUTILS
fakevideosink plugin used by the example pipeline.
The sample was also amended to fix:
- no call to main.
- using autovideosink instead of fakevideosink. Using Fakevideoskink
is preferred because its primary purpose is for debugging and sample
pipelines. Autovideosink does not work because there is no video
output device.
- No function on_message. Without this function, the script fails
because of the missing function.
- The script sets the pipeline to Gst.State.EOS instead of
Gst.State.NULL which results in a failed pipeline state. When the
state is set to NULL, gstreamer automatically calls EOS. Manually
setting the pipeline state to EOS results in the following error:
Trying to dispose element sink, but it is in PLAYING instead of
the NULL state. You need to explicitly set elements to the NULL
state before dropping the final reference, to allow them to
clean up. A refcounting bug may also cause this problem in the
application or some element.
In addition, the default timeout is set too low and would result in a
test failure, this has been changed to 200 seconds.
These issues are now properly fixed, and the sample script passes.

This reverts commit 25033cfb86.
This perl package is deprecated and gives following recommendations while
building:
*** THIS IS NOT AN ERROR, JUST A MESSAGE FOR YOUR INFORMATION ***
Do you really need Crypt::SSLeay?
Starting with version 6.02 of LWP, https support was unbundled into
LWP::Protocol::https. This module specifies as one of its prerequisites
IO::Socket::SSL which is automatically used by LWP::UserAgent unless
this preference is overridden separately. IO::Socket::SSL is a more
complete implementation, and, crucially, it allows hostname
verification. Crypt::SSLeay does not support this. At this point,
Crypt::SSLeay is maintained to support existing software that already
depends on it.
However, it is possible that your software does not really depend on
Crypt::SSLeay, only on the ability of LWP::UserAgent class to
communicate with sites over SSL/TLS.
If are using version LWP 6.02 or later, and therefore have installed
LWP::Protocol::https and its dependencies, and do not explicitly use
Net::SSL before loading LWP::UserAgent, or override the default socket
class, you are probably using IO::Socket::SSL and do not really need
Crypt::SSLeay.
Before installing Crypt::SSLeay, you may want to try specifying a
dependency on LWP::Protocol::https.

Commit d8c86be9cd (support/testing: fix python-gitdb2 test) tried to

While that works on recent distros, the image used by our docker

Python 2.7 will not be maintained past 2020.
Many scripts on the tree are used during the build and should keep
Python 2 compatibility for a while.
This is not the case for the runtime test infra. It's meant to be run in
modern distros only, so it can safely switch to support Python 3 only.
An advantage of this approach is to have less scenarios to test in.
Otherwise every change to the test infra or runtime tests would need to
be tested against both versions of the interpreter, increasing the
effort of the developers, to ensure the compatibility to Python 2 was
not broken.
In order to accomplish the change to Python 3:
- change the shebang for run-tests;
- use Python 3 urllib as a drop-in replacement for Python 2 urllib2;
- when writing the downloaded binary files, explicitly open the output
file as binary;
- when subprocess is used to retrieve the text output from commands,
explicitly ask for text output. For this, use 'universal_newlines'
because 'text' was added only on Python 3.7;
- when pexpect is used to retrieve the text output from qemu or git,
explicitly ask for text output using 'encoding';
- the code using csv currently follows the example in the documentation
for the Python 2 module, change it to follow the example in the
documentation for the Python 3 module;
- fix the relative import for test_git.py to be Python 3 compliant.

The recent bump of a number of python packages broke docker-compose, as
docker-compose specifies both minimum and maximum versions for (most of) its
dependencies:
Dependencies of docker-compse 1.20.1 (! = unmet):
cached-property: < 2 (currently 1.51)
docopt: < 0.7 (currently 0.6.2)
! pyyaml: < 4.0, patched to < 4.3 (currently 5.1.2)
requests: < 2.19, patched to < 3 (currently 2.22.0)
! texttable: < 0.10 (currently 1.6.2)
websocket-client: < 1.0 (currently 0.56.0)
! docker: < 4.0 (currently 4.1.0)
dockerpty: < 0.5 (currently 0.4.1)
six: < 2 (currently 1.12.0)
jsonschema: < 3 (currently 2.5.1)

backports.ssl-match-hostname: >= 3.5 (currently 3.7.0.1)
ipaddress: >= 1.0.16 (currently 1.0.23)
To fix this, bump docker-compose to the most recent release (1.24.1). This
is unfortunately not enough, as our docker, pyyaml, requests and texttable
packages are too new, so add 3 patches from upstream to relax the version
checks of dependencies. Notice that patch 0003 is from
https://github.com/docker/compose/pull/6623 and has not been merged yet.

and the fact that all downstream users have to patch it is ongoing here:

The python-cbor sample script to be run on the target dumps a binary

This non-utf-8 is currently silently ignored by the Emulator class /

Since "2467822c85 package/checksec: bump to version 2.1.0" the hardening
tests fail because upstream slightly changed the way the script is
called.
According to README.md: "- All options now require `--$option=$value`
instead of `--$option $value`"
Instead of just replacing '--output json' with '--output=json' take into
account that upstream also changed the usage example to show --format
instead of --output. Both options do exactly the same, but following the
usage example seems to be more future-proof.
Upstream also improved the json output. Now when a file is passed as
parameter, the json has the file name as the main key, instead of the
string "file". Adjust the test cases accordingly.

More and more packages being tested by the test infra, e.g. syslog-ng,
need entropy at startup, usually reading from /dev/random.
Some test cases can also depend on a kernel version newer than the
builtin ones already provided by the test infra:
- 3.11.0 for armv5;
- 4.0.0 for armv7.
Add a new builtin kernel to be used by such test cases.
Add it for armv5 so most test cases that switch to use this kernel can
keep using BASIC_TOOLCHAIN_CONFIG.
Use the same kernel version and kernel config as qemu_arm_versatile plus
HW_RANDOM_VIRTIO for VirtIORNG to be usable.
Copy the actual binary file from the syslog-ng runtime test at current
master @ 29e1cb8884.
Since there is already a 'kernel-versatile' file on autobuild.buildroot.net
and we must keep it with this name for reproducibility purposes, create a
simple naming convention for newer builtin kernel images and dtb files:
kernel-<defconfig>-<kernel_series_version>
<dtb_name>-<kernel_series_version>.dtb

- pass '-device virtio-rng-pci' to qemu.

All upcoming tests for git refs will rely on the return code of make to
determine whether a git ref can be downloaded or not and also to
determine whether the downloaded content is correct (all of this taking
advantage of the check-hash mechanism already in place for git
packages).
So to avoid false results i.e. in the case the check-hash mechanism
become broken in the master branch, add some sanity checks before the
actual test of download git refs.
Add the minimum test case for git refs containing only sanity checks.
Reuse the commit in the static repo.
Add a br2-external with two packages to check that:
- trying to download an invalid sha1 generates an error;
- downloading a valid sha1 that contains unexpected content generates
an error.
In order to ease the maintenance and review, each upcoming patch adding
checks to this test case will add at same time the commits to the static
repo, the equivalent packages to the br2-external and code to the test
case.

Add one test case to ensure the hash is checked for git packages:
- correct hash;
- wrong hash;
- no hash file.
Add required infra:
- a GitRemote class, that can start a git server in the host machine to
emulate a remote git server under the control of the test;
- a new base class, called GitTestBase, that inherits from BRTest and
must be subclassed by all git test cases.
Its setUp() method takes care of configuring the build with a
br2-external, avoiding to hit http://sources.buildroot.net by using
an empty BR2_BACKUP_SITE. It also avoids downloading not
pre-installed dependencies (i.e. lzip) every time by calling 'make
dependencies' using the common dl directory, and it instantiates the
GitRemote object.
Besides the Python scripts, add some fixtures used during the tests:
- a br2-external (git-hash) with one package for each part of the test
case;
- a static git bare repo (repo.git) to be served using GitRemote class.
Neither the br2-external nor the check hash functionalities are the
subject of these tests per se, so for simplicity limit the check to the
error codes and don't look for the messages in the log.
