Currently, it is not possible for a br2-external tree to override a
defconfig bundled in Buildroot, nor is it possible to override one from
a previous br2-external tree in the stack.
However, it is interesting that a latter br2-external tree be able to
override a defconfig:
- the ones bundled in Buildroot are minimalist, and almost always
build a toolchain, so a br2-external tree may want to provide a
"better" defconfig (better, in the sense "suited for the project");
- similarly for a defconfig from a previous br2-external tree.
But we can't do that, as the rules for the defconfigs are generated in
the order the br2-external trees are specified, all after the bundled
defconfigs. Those rule are patten-matching rules, which means that the
first one to match is used, and the following ones are ignored.
Add a new utility macro, 'reverse', inspired from GMSL, that does what
it says: reverse a list of words.
Use that macro to reverse the list of br2-external trees, so that the
latters win over the formers, and even over bundled ones.

For our own manual, this will come in handy when we introduce a

that snippet being generated first.

When using a br2-external tree, it is possible (as stated in our manual)
to implement whatever arbitrary extra make rules (such as flashing a
board, or extracting the rootfs in an NFS export...). Some of those
extra rules might be exposed to the user as new entry points that the
user can call by itself.
However, there is no way for the br2-external to advertise those new
rules in the help text.
We add the possibility to do so, by adding a new make rule, called
help-custom, advertised in our own help info.
It is up to the br2-external tree to provide whatever help text is
deemed necessary. The format of the help is completely free-form.
Note that we need to provide an empty, dummy help-custom rule, since it
is always advertised (making it .PHONY does not work). Since this rule
is empty, make gently reports that there is "Nothing to be done for
`help-local'", which is pretty well fitting when help-local was not
provided (either because there's no br2-external tree, or when the
br2-external tree does not provide it.

Currently, we forcibly override BR2_EXTERNAL when building the manual,
so as to avoid referring to packages therein from the manual.
However, when generating the lists of packages, we limit ourselves to
scanning for packages in (Buildroot's) TOPDIR and never search in
BR2_EXTERNAL. So, we do not really need to override BR2_EXTERNAL when
generating the manual to achieve the same result.
Furthermore, we're only looking for packages that are defined in the
sub-menu "Target packages", and never anywhere else, and especially not
in the sub-menu "User-provided options".
Finally, we're soon to completely eliminate use of BR2_EXTERNAL in
Kconfig altogether, so that would no longer have any impact anyway.
So, just leave BR2_EXTERNAL alone when generating the manual.

When building in a different output directory than the original build,
there will currently be a lot of ccache misses because in many cases
there is some -I/... absolute path in the compilation. Ccache has an
option CCACHE_BASEDIR to substitute absolute paths with relative paths,
so they wil be the same in the hash (and in the output).
Since there are some disadvantages to this path rewriting, it is made
optional as BR2_CCACHE_USE_BASEDIR. It defaults to y because the
usefulness of ccache is severely reduced without this option.
In addition to CCACHE_BASEDIR, we also substitute away the occurences
of $(HOST_DIR) in the calculation of the compiler hash. This is done
regardless of the setting of BR2_CCACHE_USE_BASEDIR because it's
quite harmless.

Because of a limitation in how makedevs resolves names [0], usernames
and groupnames would be resolved with UIDs and GIDs from the host, not
the target.
Fixing makedevs would involve us rewriting a /etc/passwd and /etc/group
parser (not too complex, still not trivial).
Document that the user and group fields should only be numbers, not
names. Also, the manual is currently misleading, as an example indeed
uses names for the user and group fields. Fix that and expand the
explanations.
The mode field should also be numbers, not a rwx combo.
Slight typographical eye-candy about major/minor fields.
[0] it uses getpwnma(3) and getgrnam(3) to resolve names to IDs, and
those only resolve names on the host (i.e. there is no way to specify

The following allows a user definition to specify that a created user
entry should not have a password value set. Original implementation
allowed a user definition to provide a password value of "=" (no quotes)
to generate a crypt-encoded empty string value. In some cases, it may be
desired to have no value specified for a user's password. By using a
value "-" for a password, no value will be set in the shadow value.
An example when this can be used is when logging into a terminal.
Logging into a session with an encoded empty password will prompt a user
to enter a password since it does not know the password is empty. If the
password field blank, a login session will not prompt for a password.

Commit 53903a15 (*config: improve handling of BR2_LEGACY) added an
option to entirely skip legacy entries, by passing a variable in the
environment.
However, it missed one location where that variable is also needed,
which is generating the list of packages and deprecated features for
inclusion in the manual.
Fix that by re-using the global $(COMMON_CONFIG_ENV) variable,
overriding just what we don't want (i.e. br2-external location and
defconfig path).
Also, slightly re-order variables so the ones we override come right
after the common settings, moving the specific ones at the end, one

Add support to explicitly state that an archive has no hash.
This can be used for archives downloaded from a repository, like a
git-clone or a subversion checkout, or using the github helper.
This will come in handy when we'll eventually make hashes mandatory as
soon as a .hash file exists: for some packages, like gcc, some versions
are downloaded as archives from upstream, while other versions may come
from a GitHub repository (via the github herlper).
In this case, a .hash file would exist, that contains hashes for the
downloaded tarballs, but archives downloaded from the repository would
not have a hash (since it is currently not possible to have reproducible
such archives). So, we'd need a way to explicitly state there is no
hash, on purpose, for those archives.
So, add 'none' as a new type of hash.

Since a while, the semantic of BR2_PREFER_STATIC_LIB has been changed
from "prefer static libraries when possible" to "use only static
libraries". The former semantic didn't make much sense, since the user
had absolutely no control/idea of which package would use static
libraries, and which packages would not. Therefore, for quite some
time, we have been starting to enforce that BR2_PREFER_STATIC_LIB
should really build everything with static libraries.
As a consequence, this patch renames BR2_PREFER_STATIC_LIB to
BR2_STATIC_LIBS, and adjust the Config.in option accordingly.
This also helps preparing the addition of other options to select
shared, shared+static or just static.
Note that we have verified that this commit can be reproduced by
simply doing a global rename of BR2_PREFER_STATIC_LIB to
BR2_STATIC_LIBS plus adding BR2_PREFER_STATIC_LIB to Config.in.legacy.

As suggested by Thomas: the AsciiDoc options we use ensure we get a sane
output of the document. We want that configuration to be applied to
other documents as well.
Up until now, it was implicit that the configuration was applied to
our manual, becasue we only supported document-specific configuration,
and the configuration we had was in our manual dir, so we got to use it.
But now, we can render other documents, especially ones from
br2-external, and we want those to also use the default configuration
from Buildroot, but still be able to provide their own customisation.
So, always add Buildroot's configuration first, if available, before we
append the document's configuration.

Move the GENDOC infra to its own file, so it is even less tied to our
manual document, so that it is more obvious that GENDOC is an infra like
our packages infras, and 'manual' is a document like we have packages.
Ideally, this new file should better go in docs/ rather than in package/ .
However, docs/ is already full of our website stuff, so adding it in
there would just serve to clutter the website.
So, let's just put alongside the other infrastructures, in package/ .

Our manual does not use external filters in asciidoc, so we are happy
with just looking for resources from our source tree.
However, other documents (like ones in br2-external) may use such
filters, to generate diagrams, graphs...
External filters generate their output files in the output directory, so
we must also look for resources in there.
Note: external filters in asccidoc are used thus:
["filter-name"]
----
Text to be rendered
----
In the future, our own manual may even make use of filters to include
some of the graphs we generate, to store in the documentation.

to check for extra dependencies required by this document
- DOC_CHECK_EXTRA_DEPENDENCIES_FMT_HOOKS
ditto, but for the specific format
- DOC_POST_EXTRACT_HOOKS:
to run additional actions to fill-in the build directory
(Replace 'DOC' with the uppercase name of the document, and 'FMT' with

This is supposed to replace the current use of overloading the internal

GENDOC_INNER still has one hard-coded path to the document's directory:
the asciidoc .conf files.
Add a new argument to GENDOC_INNER to pass the directory of the
document.
Notes:
- this makes for overly-long lines, but splitting is not possible,
otherwise the first argument on the continuation line would get (at
least) a leading space or tab, and that would break either or all of
the variables names, the dependency rules, or the filenames we look
for. A future patch will further clean this up (see: docs/asciidoc: call
$(pkgname) and $(pkgdir) in a single place.)
- this means that another document would be missing our tweaks from
asciidoc-text.conf to not render images and sanely render hyperlinks.
But that was already the case anyway, since we were using docs/$(1)/ to
search for that file. A further patch will allow us to have such
configuration in a common place.

document in them:
MANUAL_$(2)_ASCIIDOC_CONF
MANUAL_$(2)_ASCIIDOC_OPTS
MANUAL_$(2)_A2X_OPTS
MANUAL_$(2)_INSTALL_CMDS
...
Also, it defines some dependency on the generation rule, onto:
manual-check-dependencies
manual-check-dependencies-$(3)
manual-prepare-sources
This is problematic, as it is not possible to have another document
generated with the GENDOC infra, or it would trigger the rules, and use
the variables for our own document, 'manual'.
Add a new argument to GENDOC_INNER to be the uppercase name of the
document, much like it is done for the PKG_*_INNER functions. Replace
any reference to 'manual' with the currently passed named of the current
document, $(1).
The remaining references to 'manual' are on purpose, as they really

The PDF manual generation reaches the default xsltproc's template
recursion limit when processing the target package list; this makes the
PDF manual generation fail [1-3].
This limit can be raised with the '--maxvars' option. Unfortunately,
this option is not correctly handled in the latest xsltproc/libxslt
release (1.1.28), but this bug is already fixed in the libxslt
repository [4].
This patch disables the PDF manual generation (makes it warn with a
meaningful error message) when the xsltproc program found in the PATH
does not support the --maxvars option.
So, one can still generate the PDF manual if he/she extends PATH with
the location of a working xsltproc, by running:
$ PATH=/path/to/custom-xsltproc/bin:${PATH} make manual-pdf

This patch reworks the manual source preparation by:
- moving the build directory under $(BUILD_DIR)/, this keeps consistency
with the other Buildroot infrastructures;
- adding a couple of targets: 'manual-rsync' and 'manual-prepare-sources',
to deal more efficiently with the manual sources and avoid rsync-ing
them on every single manual-* target.
The 'manual-rsync' target only copies the manual sources under git, while
the 'manual-prepare-sources' also takes care of the generated ones. These
targets are now run only once, and the manual build is no longer cleaned
after each manual format generation.
Now, the 'manual-clean' target only remove the manual build directory, but
keeps the output one $(O)/output/doc/manual unchanged.
Doing so (moving the manual build directory and keeping it between 2
manual format generation) ensures that all generated sources are taken
in account when generating the manual [1].

While the autotools infrastructure was using FOO_MAKE_OPT, generic packages
were typically using FOO_MAKE_OPTS. This inconsistency becomes a problem
when a new infrastructure is introduced that wants to make use of
FOO_MAKE_OPT(S), and can live alongside either generic-package or
autotools-package. The new infrastructure will have to choose between either
OPT or OPTS, and thus rule out transparent usage by respectively generic
packages or generic packages. An example of such an infrastructure is
kconfig-package, which provides kconfig-related make targets.
The OPTS variant is more logical, as there are typically multiple options.
This patch renames all occurrences of FOO_MAKE_OPT in FOO_MAKE_OPTS.

Section 'Creating your own board support' is seemingly written in the
mindset of adding support for public boards. Therefore, it is more suited in
the Developer guide, rather than in the User guide.
Adding support for custom non-public boards falls under the

section.

- Rename 'Daily use' to 'General Buildroot usage'
- Move chapters 'make tips', 'Eclipse integration', and 'Advanced usage' as
sections under the 'General Buildroot usage' chapter.
- Rename 'Details on Buildroot configuration' into 'Buildroot configuration'
- Rework the 'Customization' section as follows:
- Move the short section on debugging the external toolchain wrapper into
the rest of the explanation on external toolchains.
- Remove the now redundant section on toolchains, as this is already
explained in much more detail in the 'Buildroot configuration' chapter.
- Move the sections on busybox/uclibc/kernel configuration from chapter
'Customization' into a separate chapter 'Configuration of other
components'.
- Rename the remaining part of the original 'Customization' chapter into
'Project-specific customization' and fold it together with the next
chapter 'Storing the configuration'
- Remove the chapter 'Going further in Buildroot innards' thanks to:
- Moving the chapter 'How Buildroot works' to the Developer guide.
- Moving the 'Advanced Buildroot usage' section to the 'General Buildroot
usage' chapter.
- Remove the chapter 'Hacking Buildroot' by:
- Adding a reference to adding packages to the 'Project-specific
customizations' chapter
- Leaving out the explicit reference to creating board support, as this is

The structure of the buildroot manual is not always clear. There is a large
number of chapters, and some chapters seem to overlap. The distinction
between general usage and developer information is not always clear.
This patch restructures the manual into four large parts:
- getting started
- user guide
- developer guide
- appendix
Except for the names of these parts, the section names are not yet changed.
Content-wise there are no changes yet either. This will be handled in
subsequent patches.
In order to achieve the introduction of a new level 'parts' above
'chapters', the section indicators (=, ==, ===, ...) of several sections
have to be moved one level down. Additionally, the leveloffset indication to
asciidoc has to be removed. Finally, to maintain more or less the same level
of detail in the table of contents, the toc.section.depth attribute is
reduced as well. Note that for some sections, less detail is visible now.

In the gendoc infrastructure, using an assignment of the form
FOO = docs/$(1)/bar
inside GENDOC_INNER does not work as expected: the $(1) value is empty here
and the value of FOO becomes 'docs//bar'.
Parameters $(2), $(3), etc. do not have this problem. The specific thing
about $(1) is that it is a parameter to GENDOC itself (indicating the
document to create) and passed transparently to GENDOC_INNER.
This is different from the package infrastructures, where $(1) is set from
$(pkgname). In fact, the same strategy could be used by the gendoc
infrastructure as well, as $(pkgname) resolves to 'manual' for file
docs/manual/manual.mk. This has the advantage that the described problem
does not occur.
Note that this means that if we want to use the same GENDOC infrastructure
for another document, it will have to reside in a separate directory than
the manual.

As reported in bug #7172 [0], setting BR2_TARGET_LDFLAGS to a value
containing a $ sign can lead to unexpected results.
This is because it is very hard to know when the $ sign gets evaluated:
- in the Buildroot-level make
- in the shell called by the Buildroot-level make
- in the package's own build-system, either at configure time, in the
Makefile, in a shell in the Makefile...
So, it is very difficult to know how much escaping that would need.
A proposal is to use a shell variable to pass such values unmolested.
But it is not that simple either, since it still contains a $ sign, and
there is not much certainty as to when it would be evaluated.
Instead, just document this limitation, both in the help text for
BR2_TARGET_LDFLAGS, and in the known-issues section in the manual.
Does not really fix#7172, but at least the limitation is documented.

The inner-xxx-targets in the buildroot package infrastructures are
evaluated using $(eval) which causes variable references to be a bit
different than in regular make code. As we want most references to be
expanded only at the time of the $(eval) we should not use standard
references $(VAR) but rather use double dollar signs $$(VAR). This includes
function references like $(call), $(subst), etc. The only exception is the
reference to pkgdir/pkgname and numbered variables, which are parameters to
the inner block: $(1), $(2), etc.
This patch introduces consistent usage of double-dollar signs throughout the
different inner-xxx-targets blocks.
In some cases, this would potentially cause circular references, in
particular when the value of HOST_FOO_VAR would be obtained from the
corresponding FOO_VAR if HOST_FOO_VAR is not defined. In these cases, a test
is added to check for a host package (the only case where such constructions
are relevant; these are not circular).
Benefits of these changes are:
- behavior of variables is now again as expected. For example, setting
$(2)_VERSION = virtual in pkg-virtual.mk will effectively work, while
originally it would cause very odd results.
- The output of 'make printvars' is now much more useful. This target shows
the value of all variables, and the expression that led to that value.
However, if the expression was coming from an inner-xxx-targets block, and
was using single dollar signs, it would show in printvars as
VAR = value (value)
while if double dollar signs are used, it would effectively look like
VAR = value (actual expression)
as is intended.
This improvement is for example effective for FOO_DL_VERSION, FOO_RAWNAME,
FOO_SITE_METHOD and FOO_MAKE.
The correctness of this patch has been verified using 'make printvars',
'make manual' and 'make legal-info' before and after applying this patch,
and comparing the output.

of the dependency graph; the name of that variable is explicit that it
contains just the depth.
However, there has been so far no release of Buildroot which would make
use of that variable, so no user should have come to rely on it.
Rename that variable so it is less specific, and more generic, so it can
be used to pass more options to graph-depends.

The Buildroot manual currently does not contain any mention of the
<pkg>_INSTALL_IMAGES_CMDS which could potentially be of interest when
developing a new 'generic-package'.

Add PRE_*_HOOKS to all the different steps through which a package may go.
This will help avoid using POST_*_HOOKS to do tasks that should be done
in the PRE_*_HOOKS of the next step.
Otherwise, when the user would do a make foo-re<step>, this would not do
what was really intented, the POST_*_HOOK of the preceding step not
being executed.

The manual has this sentence for the dependency on a C library *and* a
toolchain feature:
foo needs an (e)glibc toolchain, or foo needs an (e)glibc toolchain
w/ C++ support
And then, just below, the comment text for C++ is just 'C++', not
'C++ support'.
Fix that, and add a bit of indentation too.

For asciidoc, a string like '+these are some words+' will be displayed in
monospace font. Such sequences are identified by searching for a matching
pair of + signs in the same block.
The string 'C++' also contains such + signs. In most cases, this does not
pose a problem and no escaping is necessary. However, if 'C++' occurs twice
in the same block, the + signs will be matched to each other, and asciidoc
formats all text between them as monospaced text. In this case, escaping of
one of these 'C++' occurances is necessary to get the right formatting.
In one place of the manual, there is a sentence that causes such a problem:
"you only have to tell whether your toolchain supports C++ or not and
whether it has built-in RPC support. If your external toolchain uses
the 'uClibc' library, then you have to tell Buildroot if it supports
largefile, IPv6, RPC, wide-char, locale, program invocation, threads
and C++."
Commit 082dec8ce4 was based on a patch fixing
this problem in one place of the manual, but was incorrectly changed while
committing.
This patch reverts the incorrect changes in that commit, and solves the
problem correctly.

Asciidoc supports two syntaxes for section titles: two-line titles (title
plus underline consisting of a particular symbol), and one-line titles
(title prefixed with a specific number of = signs).
The two-line title underlines are:
Level 0 (top level): ======================
Level 1: ----------------------
Level 2: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Level 3: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Level 4 (bottom level): ++++++++++++++++++++++
and the one-line title prefixes:
= Document Title (level 0) =
== Section title (level 1) ==
=== Section title (level 2) ===
==== Section title (level 3) ====
===== Section title (level 4) =====
The buildroot manual is currenly using the two-line titles, but this has
multiple disadvantages:
- asciidoc also uses some of the underline symbols for other purposes (like
preformatted code, example blocks, ...), which makes it difficult to do
mass replacements, such as a planned follow-up patch that needs to move
all sections one level down.
- it is difficult to remember which level a given underline symbol (=-~^+)
corresponds to, while counting = signs is easy.
This patch changes all two-level titles to one-level titles in the manual.
The bulk of the change was done with the following Python script, except for
the level 1 titles (-----) as these underlines are also used for literal
code blocks.
This patch only changes the titles, no other changes. In
adding-packages-directory.txt, I did add missing newlines between some
titles and their content.

Some packages need a host-python interpreter with a version different
from the one installed in the target to run some build scripts (eg.
scons requires python2 to run, to build any kind of packages even if
the python interpreter selected for the target is python3).
In such cases, we need to add the right host-python dependency to the
package using the host-python-package infrastructure, and we also want
to invoke the right host python interpreter during the build steps.
This patch adds a *_NEEDS_HOST_PYTHON variable that can be set either
to 'python2' or 'python3'. This variable can be set by any package
using the host-python-package infrastructure to force the python
interpreter for the build. This variable also takes care of setting
the right host-python dependency.
This *_NEEDS_HOST_PYTHON variable only affects packages using the
host-python-package infrastructure.
If some configure/build/install commands are overloaded in the *.mk
file, the right python interpreter should be explicitly called.
If the package defines some tool variable (eg.: SCONS), the variable
should explicitly call the right python interpreter.
[Thomas:
- fixes to the commit log and documentation suggested by Yann
- rename the variable from <pkg>_FORCE_HOST_PYTHON to
<pkg>_NEEDS_HOST_PYTHON, as suggested by Yann
- do not allow any other value than python2 and python3 in
<pkg>_NEEDS_HOST_PYTHON, as suggested by Yann.]
