Following d0f4f95e39 ("Makefile: rework
main directory creation logic"), BINARIES_DIR is not implicitly
created by the main Makefile at the beginning of the build, leaving
that up to whatever piece of code needs to install something in
$(BINARIES_DIR).
The afboot-stm32 package didn't pay attention to this, which this
commit fixes.
While at it, we move the afboot-stm32 installation into
<pkg>_INSTALL_IMAGES_CMDS, because using <pkg>_INSTALL_TARGET_CMDS to
install only files to BINARIES_DIR is a bit strange.

Add notes to test grub2 running on ARM using qemu. The arm section
describes how to run it using u-boot and aarch64 shows how to do it
using efi, which is similar to what has to be done for x86_64.
The source for OVMF builds is also changed to
https://www.kraxel.org/repos/jenkins/edk2/ which is the source for
nightly builds (as rpms but which can be extracted in any distribution),
as the sourceforge link provided only very old builds.

This commit enables the arm-uboot, arm-efi and aarch64-efi grub2
platforms in Buildroot.
With the uboot platform, the grub2 image gets built as a u-boot image
and is loaded from u-boot through a regular "bootm". The only
requirement from the u-boot side in order to allow this is that u-boot
is built with CONFIG_API enabled. CONFIG_API seems to not be enabled
by default in most in-tree configurations, however, it seems to be
available for quite some time now. So it might be possible to use this
even on older u-boot versions. This is available only for arm
(32-bit).
With the efi platform, grub2 gets built as an EFI executable. This
allows EFI firmware to find and load it similarly as it can be done
for x86_64. Also, since u-boot v2016.05, u-boot is able to load and
boot an EFI executable, so the uboot efi platform can also be used
from u-boot in recent versions. This has been enabled (mostly) by
default for ARM u-boot. efi platform is available for both arm and
aarch64.

grub2 requires the host grub2-mkimage tool to build some of its target
images. The current way of building this tool in the grub2 package is
to perform a simultaneous host-tools/target-bootloader build during
the grub2 build step.
This method makes the recipe complex to understand, and proved to be a
complication during the work to enable grub2 support for architectures
other than x86.
This patch tries to do a better separation between the build of grub2
host tools and target boot loader image, as a partial step to enable
grub2 to build for other architectures.

When building with glibc 2.28+, the "major", "minor" and "makedev"
functions are defined in "sys/sysmacros.h". This commit backports
upstream commit 1a74985b2a404639b08882c57f3147229605dfd5 to fix the
build with glibc 2.28.

U-boot has provided SPL support as a viable replacement for the

As reported by Jeff Wittrock in bug #11396, the U-Boot environment
image checksum is invalid for big endian targets, because the test on
the BR2_ENDIAN Config.in option doesn't take into account that it is
double quoted.
The fix was provided by Jeff himself on bugzilla.

Passing CFLAGS/CPPFLAGS in the environment confuses the ATF version
provided by Marvell, and we in fact only need to pass CROSS_COMPILE,
which is already in ARM_TRUSTED_FIRMWARE_MAKE_OPTS.
We however keep TARGET_MAKE_ENV so that the PATH with $(HOST_DIR) is
kept.
This change has been tested with all current defconfigs that build
ATF:

U-Boot fails to build in a GitLab CI context because the kconfig-package
build stage is unable to find bison or flex even though they are
installed in HOST_DIR.
To fix this, set UBOOT_MAKE_ENV so that UBOOT_KCONFIG_MAKE uses the
correct PATH.

Recent U-Boot no longer ship the flex/bison generated kconfig parser, as
of commit e91610da7c8a9fe42f3e5a75f06c3d1a0cb5f815 (kconfig: re-sync
with Linux 4.17-rc4).
So, add the conditional kconfig dependencies, as we just did for the
kernel.

Some U-Boot configurations use lzop, which may not be available on the
build machine since it's not a mandatory dependency of Buildroot.
To solve this, a new option BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_NEEDS_LZOP is introduced,
and handled in a similar way to the existing
BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_NEEDS_OPENSSL option.
This fixes the build of the dra7xx_evm U-Boot defconfig as of U-Boot
2018.07, on a build machine without lzop installed.

U-Boot SPL configures pinmuxes, clocks and other low-level devices. On
the Xilinx ZynqMP SoCs the code to do this resides in a file called
psu_init_gpl.c which is initially generated by the Xilinx development
tools. Add an option to pass these files from the outside (e.g. in the
board files).
For this to work properly, a patch to U-Boot is needed. However this
patch must be applied by each defconfig using
BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_ZYNQMP_PSU_INIT_DIR. If it were in boot/uboot/ to be
applied unconditionally, it would break the build for configs using a
U-Boot version where the patch is already applied.

In order to boot on the Xilinx ZynqMP SoCs, U-Boot SPL requires a
recent PMU firmware loaded. Instruct U-Boot to add pmufw.bin to the
boot.bin file together with U-Boot SPL, and the boot ROM will load
both.
For this to work properly, a patch to U-Boot is needed. However this

BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_ZYNQMP_PMUFW. If it were in boot/uboot/ to be applied

So the host ncurses includes and library are used instead of a mix of both,
causing corrupted characters. Similar to the linux fix in commit
6d3d09e232 (linux: don't override HOSTCC for kconfig), except that we
pass the linker flags in HOSTLDFLAGS.

By default, the builsystem for uboot defaults to 'legacy', while the
default version is very well capable of using the 'kconfig' buildsystem
instead.
Having the 'legacy' buildsystem be the default in that case makes it
quite inconvenient for users: they would expect to be able to use e.g.
uboot-menuconfig et al. with the default uboot version.
Switch to using 'kconfig' when we use the latest version. Keep the
'legacy' as default for everything else.
Also, invert the 'legacy' and 'kconfig' entries in the choice: it is
nicer to have the recent and future-proof entry first.

In commit 2a27294e9a ("grub2: force
-fno-stack-protector in CFLAGS"), a fix was made to the grub2 package
to make it build properly even when SSP support is enabled.
However, commit 20a4583ebf ("security
hardening: add RELFO, FORTIFY options") reworked how SSP options are
passed, and they are now passed in CPPFLAGS instead of CFLAGS, making
the fix introduced by 2a27294e9a no
longer operating.
This commit will force no-stack-protector in CPPFLAGS instead of
CFLAGS.

Commit baae5156ce (uboot: use local fdt headers) changed the uboot logic
to pass the host include directories with -idirafter instead of -I, so
include files local to u-boot would be preferred over host includes.
This unfortunately breaks configurations using
BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_NEEDS_OPENSSL on hosts with incompatible openssl headers
installed in the system default include directories as explained here:

The problem is that -idirafter directories gets added to the very end of the
search order, AFTER the system default directories.
Instead use -isystem which causes the directories to be added after -I but
before the system default directories. With this in place, the include
directories of u-boot will first be scanned, followed by the host includes
and finally the system default include directories.

After commit b8c3e94173 ("package/dtc: qemu system build need libfdt")
changed the dtc install target from 'install-bin' to 'install', uboot
compilation failures occurred because libfdt related headers were now
suddenly taken from output/host/include rather than from the uboot sources
itself.
Commit 3a6573ccee ("uboot: use local libfdt.h") solved this by patching
one specific uboot source file, tools/fdtgrep.c, to replace '<...>'-style
includes by '"..."'-style includes.
However, depending on the uboot version, this may not be enough: there may
be other references to fdt header files. In particular taking into account
that it is not uncommon to have vendor-provided uboot trees which have
custom changes.
The root of the problem is that the uboot.mk file passes the host compiler
as follows:

where HOST_CFLAGS contains the string '-I$(HOST_DIR)/include'
The uboot makefiles then use constructs of the form:
$(CC) $(CPPFLAGS) $(CFLAGS) .....
where CPPFLAGS may contain -I references pointing to local directories.
On the expanded compiler command-line, Buildroot's '-I$(HOST_DIR)/include'
is thus present _before_ any -I to local directories, and thus takes
precedence. And that becomes a problem for header files present both
locally as in the Buildroot host directory, which is the case for libfdt.
To fix this problem without having to patch u-boot sources, use '-idirafter'
rather than '-I' to pass the Buildroot host include directory. '-idirafter'
is basically the same thing, but adds the specified directory at the end
of the include precedence chain, rather than at the beginning.

ATF >= 1.3 builds a host program called fiptool which uses
OpenSSL, so we need to build host-openssl. We could have made it an
optional dependency like U-Boot does, but since most ATF versions are
going to be >= 1.3 in the near future, we simply make host-openssl a
mandatory dependency.
However, the ATF build system is not very good, and you can't easily
pass flags that will affect the build of host programs. Therefore, we
take the approach of building fiptool separately before triggering the
real build process.
It would obviously be better to fix ATF itself, but as usual with
those bootloader packages, we fetch different versions depending on
the platform/configuration, making it difficult to use patches.

Since 0542bb79e8 (uboot: Support multiple environment source files),
missing user-supplied environment source files is no longer detected.
This is because we cat them all, and feed the concatenation to the stdin
of mkenvimage. So, if one source file is missing, the cat exits in error,
but the compound command exits with the exit code of the last command,
which is that of mkenvimage, which happens to be happy with whatever it
is fed on its stdin, even is empty.
We fix that by creating a temporary file, that we even leave afterward
for the user to inspect.
We also move it out of the _CMDS block and into a macro of its own, so
that it is easier to write and maintain.

Following our feedback, Marvell has added a README.md file into the
branch that contains the firmware. Thereore, this commit bumps the
version to the commit that includes the README.md file (it's the only
change, the firmware files are unmodified), updates
<pkg>_LICENSE_FILES to point to README.md, and adds the hash for this
license files.

Some systems, including Marvell Armada 7k/8k SoCs, have a separate
System Control Processor (SCP) for power management, clocks, reset
and system control. ATF Boot Loader stage 2 (BL2) loads optional
SCP_BL2 image into a platform-specific region of secure memory.
This package adds SCP_BL2 firmware for Marvell Armada 7040 and 8040 SoCs.

Some ARM64 platforms (such as Allwinner A64/H5) have a boot process
where U-Boot encapsulates the BL31 part of the ARM trusted
firmware. For such platforms, we need to build ATF before U-Boot, and
pass a BL31 variable pointing to ATF bl31.bin to the U-Boot build
process.
This commit introduces a BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_NEEDS_ATF_BL31 variable to
achieve this.

Some platforms (e.g Allwinner ARM64) don't build a FIP image out of
ATF, but only a BL31 image, which is then encapsulated in U-Boot. This
commit adds an ATF option to build such an image.

ATF can be used in different ways:
- ATF encapsulates U-Boot as the BL33, which is what is done on ARM
Juno (currently supported in Buildroot) and Marvell platforms (soon
to be supported)
- U-Boot encapsulates ATF's BL31, which is what is done on Allwinner
ARM64 platforms.
Until now we were assumming the former was always the case, but
obviously it isn't. Therefore, this patch adds an option that allows
to explicitly tell ATF that it encapsulates U-Boot as its BL33.
We adapt the only defconfig that uses ATF so that it enables this
option as appropriate.

Currently, our arm-trusted-firmware unconditionally builds a FIP
(Firmware Image Package). While this is often needed on platforms
where ATF encapsulates U-Boot, it is not the case on some other
platforms where it's U-Boot that encapsulates parts of ATF.
In order to prepare the support for the later platforms, we make
building the FIP image optional, and update the only defconfig we have
that uses ARM Trusted Firmware.
Note: we considered adding a "default y" here to preserve backward
compatibility, but there really isn't any default that is sane:
whether a FIP image needs to be built or not is purely platform
specific.

Since the BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_SPL_NAME option accepts a space-separated
list of binaries, the same option can be reuses for TPL binaries as
well. This commit updates the string and help text to indicate that

grub is no longer maintained: it is stuck at version 0.97 with huge
patches that have no opportunity to be applied upstream, as upstream
has even renamed it grub-legacy.
Besides, it no longer builds correctly with recent binutils versions,
and even the huge patches we could grab from Debian do not help the
slightest.
Since upstream really considers it dead, and there are at least two
alternatives (grub2 and syslinux), just remove grub.
Add a legacy entry.
Remove the test cases as well.

grub2 fails to configure when BR2_SSP_ALL is enabled, with the following
configure error:
checking whether -fno-asynchronous-unwind-tables works... yes
checking whether -fno-unwind-tables works... yes
checking for target linking format... unknown
configure: error: no suitable link format found
This can be worked around by enforcing -fno-stack-protector in the
package CFLAGS in a way that overrides the SSP flag, as is already done
for the valgrind package.

As discussed in the mailing list, grub2 usage notes were growing too big
for a Config.in documentation, and so it was agreed that a readme.txt in
the package directory is a better place to put them.
This commit simply moves the documentation as-is to preserve the
original contents as they were in Config.in which can be worked on in
further commits.

After many years since the last release and a long time with grub 2.02
in beta, there is finally a release and it brings many bug fixes and
interesting features such as support for ARM.
Patch boot/grub2/0001-remove-gets.patch doesn't seem to be required
anymore as grub-core/gnulib/stdio.in.h has changed significantly since
"053cfcd Import new gnulib." and has another treatment for gets.
Patch
boot/grub2/0002-grub-core-gettext-gettext.c-main_context-secondary_c.patch
was a backport which is present after the bump and therefore is also no
longer necessary.
Since we're adding a Config.in comment, we also introduce a
BR2_TARGET_GRUB2_ARCH_SUPPORTS hidden boolean, in order to avoid
repeating the architecture dependencies.

Xtensa core configuration must be added to U-Boot before it can be
built for that xtensa CPU variant. Extract configuration files from the
xtensa overlay as is done for other packages that need to be configured
for a specific xtensa core.

grub2 builds for the target but installs with DESTDIR=$(HOST_DIR). Since
we set prefix to /usr in TARGET_CONF_OPTS, this results in installing
things in $(HOST_DIR)/usr.
To make sure we don't install in $(HOST_DIR)/usr, override --prefix and
--exec-prefix.

Since [1] syslinux is built with the target toolchain in order to
properly build with gnu-efi package. But toolchains built with
binutils 2.26 break the syslinux legacy-BIOS build as reported at [2],
due to binutils bug #19615.
Thanks to Benoît Allard for the investigation and the link to the
binutils bug [3].

Curently, we have a choice to select between stripping and not
stripping. This is legacy code from back when we had a third option,
sstrip (super-strip).
Since we removed sstrip, stripping or not stripping is now just a
boolean rather than a choice.
Make it so.
We make BR2_STRIP_strip default to 'y' to keep the current behaviour of
defaulting to stripping.
Move BR2_STIP_none to legacy, and instruct the user to review the new
setting.
Drop any reference to BR2_STRIP_none in comments.

Thanks to the bump of gnu-efi from 3.0.5 to 3.0.6, patch 0008 in the
syslinux package is no longer needed. More specifically, it's commit
bf07e8141777e5a2d67ec8447084215224bdad4b in upstream gnu-efi that
fixed the underlying issue.

More and more of our defconfigs need to generate a U-Boot boot
script. It's a simple call to mkimage, but we already have 12
instances of this logic in board/, and there are patch series waiting
in patchwork adding 3 more boards that need this.
So let's add an option in the U-Boot package to generate such a boot
script image easily.
Note that we assume a single script needs to be generated, and the
output file name is boot.scr. The only platform for which it seems to
not be the case are the Boundary Devices platforms: they generate two
boot scripts, 6x_bootscript and 6x_upgrade, but they are anyway
installed inside TARGET_DIR, not BINARIES_DIR.

ARM_TRUSTED_FIRMWARE_MAKE_TARGET is expanded, but it's never assigned
so it is always empty. On the other hand the make targets are defined
in ARM_TRUSTED_FIRMWARE_MAKE_OPTS, which should contain options, not
targets.
Clean it all up by moving the targets in the proper place, replacing
the useless $(ARM_TRUSTED_FIRMWARE_MAKE_TARGET).

Instead of excluding the hash specifically for the custom tarball and
custom version cases, exclude it always except in the one case where
we do have a hash: the latest version.
This simplifies the code a little because soon we will add hash checks
for git as well, so we also need an exclusion in that case.
It is not needed to exclude it twice for barebox and barebox-aux,
because they use the same source tarball and barebox-aux can only be
enabled if barebox is enabled. So simplify even further by pulling
the exclusion logic out of inner-barebox-package.

Until now, the host toolchain was used to build syslinux, as it was
not possible to build a 32-bit syslinux with a x86-64 toolchain.
However, syslinux requires gnu-efi, and gnu-efi is built using the
target toolchain. Mixing different toolchains doesn't work well, so
this commit changes the syslinux package to use the target toolchain
for syslinux as well. This is made possible by patches
0003-Fix-ldlinux.elf-Not-enough-room-for-program-headers-.patch and
0004-memdisk-Force-ld-output-format-to-32-bits.patch.
Since syslinux also contains some utilities that have to run on the
host, those have to continue being built with the host toolchain,
which requires patch 0005-utils-Use-the-host-toolchain-to-build.patch.
Patch 0006-lzo-Use-the-host-toolchain-for-prepcore.patch is about
building prepcore, another utility with the host toolchain as it is
required at build-time.
This was tested using a Buildroot's built x86_64 toolchain, and
checked that the output binaries are 32-bits. It was tested as well if
they actually boot on hardware.

On older SoCFPGA SoCs, there was not enough SRAM to fit the entire
U-Boot, so a SPL model was used. The SPL was therefore the binary that
had to be "prepared" to be loaded by the ROM code using the mkpimage
tool.
With newer SoCFPGA SoCs, there is enough SRAM to fit the entire U-Boot,
and therefore the ROM code directly loads U-Boot. In this case, it's the
real U-Boot image (not the SPL) that needs to be prepared using
mkpimage.
This code adds support for the newer SoCFPGA SoCs, by adjusting the
mkpimage related logic to apply on the SPL if an SPL is enabled, or on
the full U-Boot image otherwise.

Commit 006a328ad6 ("util-linux: fix build with ncurses") removed
dependency on BR2_USE_WCHAR, but failed to update the reverse
dependencies of util-linux.
This commit fixes all such reverse dependencies by removing dependency
on BR2_USE_WCHAR as it is not required by package itself.

Commit 3e3fef39e7 added new and improved
patch handling, with BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_PATCH. This was in addition to
the existing BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_CUSTOM_PATCH_DIR option, that only
handled directories.
Later, commit 21b25d28fc moved the old
BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_CUSTOM_PATCH_DIR to legacy options. But on the way,
bad things happened:
* The original option was a string, while the one added to Config.in.legacy
is a bool. This results in a warning from defconfigs that actually define
the old BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_CUSTOM_PATCH_DIR (because a string is not a valid
value for a bool), but it does not result in the legacy option being
selected. Consequently, BR2_LEGACY is not selected either.
* The advice at the top of Config.in.legacy to add a hidden WRAP option
to select BR2_LEGACY was not heeded.
* The advice at the top of Config.in.legacy to use the old string
option as the default for the new string option was not heeded. In
this case, the variable was not just renamed, as the old option
supported directories only, while the new one supports files too.
But since the old option is a subset of the new option, it can still
be used to set a useful default.
So, this mod turns the legacy option back to a string, adds a hidden
bool WRAP option to set BR2_LEGACY when the string is non emoty, and
uses the legacy option to set the default for the new option.

When generating the environment image the target endianess should
be taken in account for CRC calculation purposes. For big endian
targets the -b flag should be passed to the mkenvimage tool.

Some U-Boot board configurations have CONFIG_FIT_SIGNATURE=y. In this
case, when U-Boot builds its tools, it requires OpenSSL support on the
host system.
Since we clearly don't want to unconditionally depend on host-openssl,
we introduce a new option to explicitly enable the dependency on
host-openssl. This is exactly identical to the existing
BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_NEEDS_DTC, for the dependency on host-dtc. It is
therefore the responsibility of the user to enable this option if his
board configuration uses CONFIG_FIT_SIGNATURE=y.
Necessary to fix bug #9316.

This unique NAME is used to construct a per br2-external tree variable,
BR2_EXTERNAL_$(NAME)_PATH, which contains the path to the br2-external
tree.
This variable is available both from Kconfig (set in the Kconfig
snippet) and from the .mk files.
Also, display the NAME and its path as a comment in the menuconfig.
This will ultimately allow us to support multiple br2-external trees at
once, with that NAME (and thus BR2_EXTERNAL_$(NAME)) uniquely defining
which br2-external tree is being used.
The obvious outcome is that BR2_EXTERNAL should now no longer be used to
refer to the files in the br2-external tree; that location is now known
from the BR2_EXTERNAL_$(NAME)_PATH variable instead. This means we no
longer need to expose, and must stop from from exposing BR2_EXTERNAL as
a Kconfig variable.
Finally, this also fixes a latent bug in the pkg-generic infra, where we
would so far always refer to BR2_EXTERNAL (even if not set) to filter
the names of packages (to decide whether they are a bootloader, a
toolchain or a simple package).
Note: since the variables in the Makefile and in Kconfig are named the
same, the one we computed early on in the Makefile will be overridden by
the one in .config when we have it. Thus, even though they are set to
the same raw value, the one from .config is quoted and, being included
later in the Makefile, will take precedence, so we just re-include the
generated Makefile fragment a third time before includeing the
br2-external's Makefiles. That's unfortunate, but there is no easy way
around that as we do want the two variables to be named the same in
Makefile and Kconfig (and we can't ask the user to un-quote that variable
himself either), hence this little dirty triple-inclusion trick.

user to create a config that builds.

This commit adds a new package for the SCP (System Control Processor)
firmware for the ARM reference platforms. There will most likely be
other SCP firmware provided by other vendors, but they might be provided
in a different form, so we for now create a vendor-specific package
named vexpress-firmware.
Since this firmware is used for booting, we create the package in boot/
and not in package/.
The package simply installs a single pre-built binary file into the
images directory.

With newer ARC toolchain obsolete -marcXXX were finally deperecated
and so compiler throws errors now about unknown option.
Solution is as simple as switching to more generic -mcu-XXX
options. Which we do. Unfortunately that change in upstream U-Boot [1]
happened right after v2016.09 was released an so we need to have that fix
for v2016.07 which is mentioned in axs10x defconfigs and for the latest
U-Boot release v2016.09 (which is selected by default if no defconfig is
used).
Once we deprecate either U-Boot version in U-Boot corresponding patch
should be removed essentially.

Sometimes it is desired to build multiple U-boot images. E.g. one to
save into flash memory and one for serial load. So far this was not
possible.
This change allows to select any combination of the target formats. They
are all copied to the image folder.

grub2 assumes the strip command will generate output and the output should
always be stripped - so, just use the $(TARGET_CROSS)strip to make sure that
the build succeeds regardless of the buildroot strip configuration.

This MBR routine is based on TS' original bootloader. It is loaded by
the bootrom stored in the companion FPGA, and chainloads an executable
located at the beginning of the first non-fs (0xda) partition.

For some platforms, there are multiple generated spl images. Extend
BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_SPL_NAME to allow these multiple images to be installed
after uboot build completes.
For example, the NextThingCo C.H.I.P. uses two binaries from uboot,
spl/sunxi-spl.bin and spl/sunxi-spl-with-ecc.bin.

Since commit 0dca644e44 ("boot/uboot: fix
missing host-openssl for i.MX28 target"), we pass HOSTCFLAGS/HOSTLDFLAGS
in the environment of U-Boot when building. This is needed to allow
U-Boot to find the OpenSSL headers/libraries when they are
needed. Unfortunately, this breaks the build with old U-Boot versions as
the U-Boot Makefiles were not designed to have HOSTCFLAGS passed in,
which causes some important CFLAGS from the U-Boot build system to be
ignored.
As suggested by Arnout, we pass the HOST_CFLAGS inside HOSTCC directly,
which allows to pass the CFLAGS without overriding the internal U-Boot
CFLAGS.
Tested with an old U-Boot (2012.10), and a modern U-Boot in a
configuration that needs OpenSSL.

By default position independent executables (PIE) are generated
when building U-Boot elf target. MetaWare debugger doesn't support
PIE (position-independent executable).
In order to allow MDB load and run U-Boot elf, we need to do a
special trick, called "mdbtrick".
This special build target is used to fake generated U-Boot elf by:
1. Reset PIE flag in ELF header
2. Strip all debug information from elf

Allow multiple file names to be listed in
BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_ENVIMAGE_SOURCE, concatenating them in the order
listed.
This allows the bulk of the environment to be shared across multiple
boards using a common environment file with board-specific values
supplied in a secondary environment source file.

This is the first level bootloader for the Actions Semiconductor S500 SoC,
which is used on boards like Roseapple Pi and LeMaker Guitar.
The bootloader performs basic configuration and chain loads u-boot for
futher setup.
This bootloader is unfortunately only available as a binary blob. It gets
configured for a specific board using a binary (32bit x86) tool based on a
.ini file (somewhat similar to sunxi .fex).

Building an U-Boot image for the i.MX23 or i.MX28 target requires to run the
bootloaders 'mxsimage' tool on the host. As mxsimage needs unconditionally
OpenSSL, building U-Boot for those targets fails if it is not available on
the host:

Add the required dependency 'host-openssl' to all the different U-Boot image
types used to build a bootloader image for an i.MX23/i.MX28 target.
Also pass HOST_CFLAGS and HOST_LDFLAGS to the U-Boot build process so the right
-I/-L options will be used to find OpenSSL.

Barebox provides an option to embed a custom environment image into
barebox binary. This image will be used, when the environment found in
the environment sector is invalid. Both embedded and external images
can be used together, so having both options at the same time is
justified.
This patch sets barebox Kconfig option CONFIG_DEFAULT_ENVIRONMENT_PATH
to user specified path. This way one can use such BR's variables like
BR2_EXTERNAL, TOPDIR etc. to provide paths to custom environment
folders.

u-boot-dtb.img only gets built by default (all target) if
CONFIG_OF_SEPARATE _AND_ CONFIG_SPL_FRAMEWORK are enabled.
Certain SoCs (E.G. Action Semi S500) use a proprietary first level
bootloader instead of u-boot SPL, but still use u-boot-dtb.img as the first
level bootloader parses the uImage header for size/loadaddr.
Ensure u-boot-dtb.img gets built if enabled by explicitly listing it as a
u-boot make target (next to all) to support such setups.

Syslinux uses the host version of gcc to build to bootloader. On systems
with gcc 5.3, this results in a bootloader that hangs. This issue has
been addressed in upstream syslinux, but an official release has not
been made yet. This commit adds the upstream patch to fix the issue.

Adds support to build barebox with an auxiliary config.
This is useful for building an SPL (Secondary Program Loader) in
addition to the traditional TPL (Tertiary Program Loader). The
Beaglebone Black for example has two barebox configurations:
- am335x_defconfig builds the full barebox bootloader with device
tree
- am335x_mlo_defconfig builds the smaller MLO bootloader that loads
the full barebox bootloader from the eMMC or SD card.

- The actual barebox package make instantiation.

No functional changes: Extracts an argument to the inner-barebox-package
function to automatically determine the uppercase package name. This is needed
to support a 2nd config build. This results in the following renaming:
'BAREBOX' -> '$(1)'
All barebox packages are meant to be built from the same sources, so related
KConfig variables (origin, version and patch directory) are not extracted.

Support optional selection of the built image filename in a
multi-image barebox build. This makes it possible to specify which
image to pick in a multi-image barebox config such as the
am335x_defconfig.

By default, the afboot-stm32 Makefile uses "CROSS_COMPILE =
arm-none-eabi-". Since I had such a toolchain installed on my system
when testing afboot-stm32, I didn't realize it wasn't using the
Buildroot toolchain.
However, using the Buildroot toolchain doesn't immediately works for
FLAT toolchains, as gcc automatically wants to create a FLAT
binary. So we need to adjust the afboot-stm32 Makefile to use directly
'ld' and not 'gcc' when linking.

make legal-info breaks when using an older u-boot version in local.mk
with OVERRIDE_SRCDIR, due to the reorganization of license files which
happened in u-boot v2013.10.
This issue had already been fixed in Buildroot for the regular use of
old u-boot versions (non-local.mk).
This patch adds the same fix to UBOOT_POST_RSYNC_HOOKS so that it also
covers the local.mk case.

For a 64bit arm architecture, Buildroot uses arm64 terminology and
from the top-level Makefile KERNEL_ARCH is set to arm64 which is then
passed to the uboot build. This causes a compilation issue as uboot
uses the top-level system architecture as it's $(ARCH). So
arch/$(ARCH)/Makefile doesn't work with arm64 unless we adjust the
arch.

Some U-Boot configurations require the Device Tree compiler to be
available, so we need to depend on host-dtc (example configuration:
zynq_zed).
However, we don't want to build it unconditionally, since the vast
majority of U-Boot configurations don't need it (and host-dtc itself
has a bunch of dependencies).
So, we simply add a Config.in option that allows users to indicate
whether their U-Boot needs DTC or not, and depend on host-dtc if this
option is enabled.

grub2's build system interprets CC, CFLAGS and CPPFLAGS as for the host
and uses TARGET_CC etc. for the target. However, NM, OBJCOPY and STRIP
are used for the target. We currently pass the host-versions of these
tools as part of $(HOST_CONFIGURE_OPTS).
While we're at it, also pass TARGET_LDFLAGS.
This problem had not been noticed up to now because usually we build on
an x86 machine for the x86 architecture, so the binutils are compatible.
However, this is not true on an i386 when building for x86_64.

incorrectly.
Default prompt for target selection was set as No that lead to missing platform

This patch reverts mentioned change making possible to build U-Boot

Note there's a probability that this particular patch won't make its way
in upstream U-Boot and better solution will be found there. But for now
we need to fix U-Boot building in Buildroot anyways.
Hopefully for the next release this patch won't be necessary.

U-Boot switched to a single .config file for board configuration. This
allows us to use the kconfig-package infrastructure.
For providing backward compatibility with older U-Boot version a user
choice between the new Kconfig and the legacy build system is
introduced.

This commit integrates generation of a bootable image
for Xilinx Zynq. The generation is independent on Xilinx
flow and utilizes the host-zynq-boot-bin package. The only
required step is to generate a proper U-Boot SPL (instead
of the FSBL).
The SPL generation might work when providing the working
ps7_init.c file to U-Boot. However, from U-Boot 2015.07
a set of generic ps7_init.c files is included and used to
build the U-Boot SPL for various boards. The ps7_init.c file
has been released under GNU/GPL license for this purpose.

The SPL searchs for u-boot-dtb.img when booting so we
enforce using of the BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_FORMAT_DTB_IMG format.

Allow to generate 'u-boot.nand', Freescale i.MX28 BootStream format (.sb)
with a header for booting from NAND flash.
There are two possibilities when preparing an image writable to NAND flash:
1) The NAND was not written at all yet or the BCB (Boot Control Blocks) is
broken. In this case, the NAND image 'u-boot.nand' needs to written.
2) The NAND flash was already written with a good BCB. This applies after
'u-boot.nand' was correctly written. There is no need to write the BCB
again. In this case, the bootloader can be upgraded by writing 'u-boot.sb'.
To satisfy both cases 'u-boot.nand' as well as the make target 'u-boot.sb' are
copied to the binaries directory.
mxsboot for NAND images needs all three parameters typed in as integer values
(hex values do not work). The default values choosen are typical sizes for a
NAND flash.

In order to support ISO9660 bootable images that rely on Grub 2, this
commit modifies thr Grub 2 makefile to generate and install an El
Torito image. Such an image is simply produced by concatenating the
cdboot.img provided by Grub 2, and the Grub 2 image generated by
Buildroot using grub-mkimage.
Since this action is so simple and cost-free, we don't bother adding a
Grub 2 sub-option for that, and simply generate the El Torito image
unconditionally.

For custom tarballs, it's quite obvious we can not check hashes.
For custom versions, that's not so obvious. One might think we could
have hashes for all the official releases, but that's not possible: if
the user uses a released version of Buildroot (say 2015.05) much later
in the future, and wants to use the then-released 2038.02 U-Boot. It now
seems pretty obvious that Buildroot 2015.02 can't know the hash for
U-Boot 2038.02.
So, disable checking the hash for custom tarballs and custom versions.

The existing u-boot patch option only allowed directories to be
specified. This adds support for URLs using similar code as found
in linux/linux.mk. Local files are also handled now.
This change is useful for Intel Edison support, so that Intel's u-boot
patch can be downloaded rather than stored in the Buildroot source tree.

For some (silly?) reason, the kconfig-package infra always wants
<pkg>_KCONFIG_FILE to be defined. So let's do like barebox does: use a
temporary AT91BOOTSTRAP3_SOURCE_CONFIG variable, and assign it to
AT91BOOTSTRAP3_KCONFIG_FILE. This way, the latter is always defined,
even if to the empty value.

In at91bootstrap3, defconfig files are spread out in various
sub-directories, so we can't easily construct the path to those
defconfig files.
As it turns out, there are no two defconfig files named the same; they
all contain at least the board name, plus some extra info. And there is
always only one directory depth below board/ where all defconfig files
are to be found.
Also, at91bootstrap3's own Makefile relies on this single-match as it
runs a 'find' command to locate the defconfig file.
So, even though we do not know the path to the defconfig file, we can
construct a shell-glob quite easily (in the hope that there will never
be more than one directory depth).

Several packages have some logic to apply custom patches that existed
before the BR2_GLOBAL_PATCH_DIR mechanism: at91bootstrap,
at91bootstrap3, barebox, uboot and linux. Currently, the logic of
those packages to apply custom patches is to match
<package-name>-*.patch, which is not consistent with what we've done
for patches stored in the package directory, and for patches stored in
BR2_GLOBAL_PATCH_DIR: in such cases, we simply apply *.patch.
Therefore, for consistency reasons, this commit changes these packages
to also apply *.patch.

Since 6.03 syslinux release, the gnu-efi sources are bundled whith
syslinux. We need to force the build system to use the Buildroot's
gnu-efi package.
Remove the patch for find-gnu-efi.sh script which was removed, as well
as the SYSROOT variable from the BUILD_CMDS, which is no longer
needed.
There are still some parallel build issues, so MAKE1 can't
be removed for now.
Add a hash file.
Fix indentation.

Barebox uses KERNEL_ARCH to derive BAREBOX_ARCH, but doesn't
currently handle the case of the x86-64 architecture. In this
case KERNEL_ARCH is x86_64, but BAREBOX_ARCH should be x86
nonetheless.

When x86-64-efi platform is selected, grub2 automatically adds -m64 to the
CFLAGS. This makes the configure script failed when the toolchain does not
have multilib support (like the Buildroot ones).

This flag seems to be obsolete. There is no piece of code in the U-Boot source
tree referencing CONFIG_NOSOFTFLOAT.
Unfortunatly the use of this flag is not documented here. Maybe it's about this
old workaround:

Building an SPL image depends on the board configuration. This option
does not enable the SPL build, but only copies the built SPL image to
the binary images folder. The current help text is misleading.

Add and use the "UNZIP" variable instead of calling directly unzip
because the variable contains the "-q" option to silence "unzip" so it
doesn't show the list of files extracted just like when tar files are
being unpacked.

The Buildroot coding style defines one space around make assignments and
does not align the assignment symbols.
This patch does a bulk fix of offending packages. The package
infrastructures (or more in general assignments to calculated variable
names, like $(2)_FOO) are not touched.
Alignment of line continuation characters (\) is kept as-is.
The sed command used to do this replacement is:

After this bulk change, following manual fixups were done:
- fix line continuation alignment in cegui06 and spice (the sed
expression leaves the number of whitespace between the value and line
continuation character intact, but the whitespace before that could have
changed, causing misalignment.
- qt5base was reverted, as this package uses extensive alignment which
actually makes the code more readable.
Finally, the end result was manually reviewed.

While the autotools infrastructure was using FOO_MAKE_OPT, generic packages
were typically using FOO_MAKE_OPTS. This inconsistency becomes a problem
when a new infrastructure is introduced that wants to make use of
FOO_MAKE_OPT(S), and can live alongside either generic-package or
autotools-package. The new infrastructure will have to choose between either
OPT or OPTS, and thus rule out transparent usage by respectively generic
packages or generic packages. An example of such an infrastructure is
kconfig-package, which provides kconfig-related make targets.
The OPTS variant is more logical, as there are typically multiple options.
This patch renames all occurrences of FOO_MAKE_OPT in FOO_MAKE_OPTS.

Since the trailing slash is stripped from $($(PKG)_SITE) by pkg-generic.mk:

so it is redundant.

The help text of grub2 explains the detailed steps to create a disk
image with grub2 installed on it. However, the steps for the
BIOS-based systems have a few minor issues fixed by this patch:
- When calling partx to get the partitions detected, we should do it
on the /dev/loop0 block device, and not on the underlying disk.img
image file.
- The grub-bios-setup utility must be called as root to work properly
on /dev/loop0.
- The steps to cleanup the partx and loop device were missing.

In preparation to add support for the SAMA5D3 Xplained board, this
commit bumps the version of the at91bootstrap3 bootloader to
v3.6.2. While doing this, it also:
- Allows this bootloader on Cortex-A5 based platforms, since SAMA5D3
are based on Cortex-A5.
- Removes a patch that no longer applies, and which has been taken
into account in at91bootstrap3 upstream.
- Switches to the upstream Github location as the source.
- Updates the installation commands to match upstream changes in the
installation process.

Ever since u-boot introduced the generic spl support in u-boot 2012.10, the
default spl output file has been spl/u-boot-spl.bin and not u-boot-spl.bin,
so use that as a more sane default value.

Following the issues reported by Jerry <g4@novadsp.com>, it appears
that there are a number of U-Boot configuration variables we are not
checking properly, leaving users with weird behavior at build time.
This commit extends the existing U-Boot checks to verify that when a
custom version, custom tarball, or custom Git or Mercurial
repositories are selected, the appropriate fields are not empty in the
configuration.

Since syslinux can now install quite a number of files, install
them in a sub-directory of $(BINARIES_DIR) for clarity.
It also aligns it to rpi-firmware, grub2, gummiboot, that install
all of their files in a sub-dir of $(BINARIES_DIR), too.

This MBR blob will look for an active partition, and boot the bootcode
present in that partition. This can be used to boot an extlinux-prepared
partition.

This new version has a very, very weird build system. There are different
images that syslinux can now build:
- the plain legacy-bios images we already supported previously
- two new EFI32 and EFI64 applications
To build one or the other, the Makefile accepts one or more of:
make (bios|efi32|efi64)
Specify all of them, and it builds all. Specify 'install', and it installs
all of them, as one may expect.
Still a regular behaviour, is to build only a subset (down to one):
make bios <-- builds just the legacy-bios images
make efi32 bios <-- builds just the legacy-bios and efi32 images
Where it gets weird is the install procedure. Can you guess how it's done?
Hint: the syslinux guys have invented the multiple-argument parsing in
pure Makefiles. To build then install only the bios images, one would do:
make bios
make bios install
Yep, that's it. make bios install. Two arguments, one action.
That makes for some funky workarounds in our install procedure...
'bios' is the only image we support so far, with efi to come in a future
patch.
Using MAKE1, as there are issues with highly-parallel builds.

Currently it is possible to choose either, both or none of
the pxelinux or isolinux images.
But it does not make sense to build none or both, as we need
at least one to boot the target, and the target can not use
more than one.
So, we need one and only one image to be selected at once.

Currently, we hard-code the path to the images we install, and
expect them to be from the core/ sub-dir.
Not all images we can install are located in core/. For example,
the efi boot images (to come later) are not located in core/.
Prepare the upcoming installation of extlinux by not expecting
images be in core/.

The host variant of syslinux wasn't exposed anywhere, so the only way
to use it was to know that a "host-syslinux" target existed. Moreover,
thanks to commit 8e0d411898 ('syslinux:
install helper programs to the host'), the host utilities of syslinux
are automatically installed to $(HOST_DIR) when building the target
syslinux.

Even though syslinux is built for the target, it does create helper
programs intended to be run on the host such as syslinux and extlinux.
This change installs these helper programs to the host so that they may be
called by post image creation scripts.

When BR2_TARGET_GRUB_SPLASH is enabled, we were passing
--enable-graphics, but when it was disabled, we were not doing
anything. However, in Grub, graphics support is enabled by default,
and you have to pass --disable-graphics to disable it.
Fix this by passing --enable-graphics or --disable-graphics as
appropriate.

In 1cece2813b (grub: add option to
configure the list of supported filesystems), we introduced the
BR2_TARGET_GRUB_FS_SUPPORT option which allows to provide a
space-separated list of filesystems that Grub should support.
However, it turns out that this not very practical, because the
iso9660 filesystem logic in Buildroot should force the ISO9660 support
to be enabled in Grub, which is not easy to do with a string option.
Therefore, this patch changes this option from a string option to a
list of boolean option, one per filesystem supported.
A few useful details:
- Since Grub legacy is dead, the list of filesystem, and therefore
the number of options, will not grow.
- We have only added options for filesystems that are likely to be
used in an embedded Linux context. Filesystems such as VSTAfs,
Minix, UFS2 or FFS2 are not supported.
- There is no need to add some Config.in.legacy support for the
previous option, since it was added after Buildroot 2013.11, and
was therefore never part of an official Buildroot release.

In the Config.in file of package foo, it often happens that there are other
symbols besides BR2_PACKAGE_FOO. Typically, these symbols only make sense
when foo itself is enabled. There are two ways to express this: with
depends on BR2_PACKAGE_FOO
in each extra symbol, or with
if BR2_PACKAGE_FOO
...
endif
around the entire set of extra symbols.
The if/endif approach avoids the repetition of 'depends on' statements on
multiple symbols, so this is clearly preferred. But even when there is only
one extra symbol, if/endif is a more logical choice:
- it is future-proof for when extra symbols are added
- it allows to have just one strategy instead of two (less confusion)
This patch modifies the Config.in files accordingly.

Some boards are configured in u-boot to store multiple redundant copies of

As reported by Matthew Weber, Grub doesn't build on 64 bits build
machines, because the host compiler produces 64 bits binaries by
default, while Grub should be built 32 bits. Therefore, this commit
passes -m32 to the Grub CFLAGS, so that 32 bits binaries are always
produced.

Grub can be configured to enable or disable the filesystems supported
in the stage 2. In addition, there are filesystem specific stage
1.5. In order to save space and build time, we provide a new option
that allows to give a space-separated list of filesystems that Grub
should support.
We default to support FAT and ext2, since most of the other
filesystems are fairly unlikely to be used.
We use this option to:
1) Pass --enable-<fs> or --disable-<fs>, which enables/disables the
support of <fs> in Grub stage 2.
2) Install only the stage 1.5 that correspond to the selected
filesystems.

* Use /dev/sda1 instead of /dev/hda1. Nowadays, most hard disk
controllers are handled using libata, and therefore the disks are
visible as /dev/sd<X>.

This commit brings a number of improvements to the grub packaging:
* It builds grub with the host compiler, which is needed so that we
can build a 32 bits grub even if the target architecture is
x86-64. To make sure we have a host compiler capable of generating
32 bits code, grub now selects the BR2_HOSTARCH_NEEDS_IA32_COMPILER
option. Building with the host compiler is done by cheating and
passing $(HOST_CONFIGURE_OPTS) in GRUB_CONF_ENV.
* Some additional CFLAGS are added to make sure grub builds properly
with modern compilers (-O0, --build-id=none, -fno-stack-protector).
* Removal of the GRUB_INSTALL_STAGING_CMDS which were not used, since
GRUB_INSTALL_STAGING was not set to YES.
* Installation of the "grub" binary in $(HOST_DIR) instead of
$(TARGET_DIR) since it's actually used only on the host to install
grub into an image or device.
* Removal of the grub uninstall commands, since they are generally
considered useless.

Although the configuration options for custom repository locations and
versions are very similar between the linux and uboot packages, there are
some minor differences. This patch lines up both packages.

Some Config.in(.host) files have constructs like:
config FOO_VERSION
string
default "1.0" if FOO_1_0
default "2.0" if FOO_2_0
default $FOO_CUSTOM_VERSION if FOO_CUSTOM
The dollar sign here is not needed and confusing, so can be removed.

http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnu.make.bugs/4260). This may break
build reproducibility.

On some platforms, the standard U-Boot binary is not called u-boot.bin,
but u-boot<something>.bin. This is for example the case on the
Cavium-provided u-boot, where the output file is called
u-boot_<boardname>.bin.
This patch adds a 'custom format' choice in the existing u-boot binary
format selection, where this name can be put. In the Cavium example, this
option could be set to:
BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_FORMAT_CUSTOM_NAME="u-boot-$(BR2_TARGET_UBOOT_BOARDNAME).bin"
