b63e155e5f support/dependencies/dependencies.sh: correct check for open perl module
Commit 4cdd99190e (support/dependencies/dependencies.sh: require open perl
package for libxcrypt) added a check for the "open" perl module for
libxcrypt, but it does not work as "open" cannot be directly used with
"require" as an argument is needed:

perl -e "require open"
Not enough arguments for open at -e line 1, at EOF
Execution of -e aborted due to compilation errors.

So special case the check to instead check with "use open ':std'".

556a0a1104 Revert "make: support: use command -v' instead of which'"
This reverts commit ca6a2907c2.

Switching to using 'command -v' instead of 'which', opened a can of
worms that is hard to fix in a timely manner:

  - recursive call to 'make' from a post-build, post-iamge script, fails
because of a redefinition of HOSTCC_NOCCACHE (a bug on its own that
    needs a separate fix anyway) [0];

  - 'make' believeing it can call "simple" commands with execve() et al.
instead of passing them through a shell via system(), and thus
failing to find 'command' in the PATH [1].

Currently, patches with renames are refused, as they reqire patch 2.7

recent to be widely available.

But patch 2.7 has been released in 2012, almost 9 years ago now; it is

e36974d9e8 support/dependencies: detect and bailout when PATH contains spaces/TABs
In Makefiles, variables are split, filtered, and otherwise mangled on
a space as a separator. In a shell, they will also be split on TABs.

We split and filter and iterate on variables in a lot of places, and
most importantly, spaces in PATH is very seldom tested, if at all, so
a lot of packages will not be working properly in such a situation.

For example, the config.guess contains constructs that are not resilient
to a space in PATH:

    PATH=$PATH:/.attbin ; export PATH

Also, our fakedate will iterate over PATH:

    for P in `echo $PATH | tr ':' ' '`; do

Those are only two cases, but the first means basically all
autotools-based packages are susceptible to subtle breakage.

Furthermore, Buildroot itself does not support that the top-level or
output directories are in a path with spaces anyway.

So, instead of chasing all cases that might be potentially broken,
let's just detect the case and bail out, like we already do when PATH
contains a \n, or when it contains the current working directory.

42f61e759a support/scripts/apply-patches.sh: do not blindly remove *.orig files
apply-patches currently blindly removes *.orig / .*.orig files as GNU patch
by default writes these as backup files when patches only apply with fuzz.

This is unfortunate as package sources may contain files ending in .orig as
well, breaking the build. Luckily GNU patch can be told to not write these
backup files using the --no-backup-if-mismatch option, so used that instead
of the .orig removal step.

--no-backup-if-mismatch is supported since GNU patch 2.3.8 (1997-06-17) and
busybox patch if built with CONFIG_DESKTOP, but E.G. isn't supported by the
BSD patch, so add logic to dependencies.sh to error out if patch doesn't
support the flag.

5ee815ab6a docs/manual: bump our gcc/g++ requirements to 4.8
Currently, we only require a gcc 4.4 version, which now is pretty old
(released in April 2009). This requirement is not even tested nowadays,
with our oldest autobuilder having a 4.7 version only.

And even then, 4.7 is still old enough that it prevents us from
upgrading some packages. For example cmake 3.10+ requires C++11

6809f38351 dependencies.sh: Check for a host python version >= 2.7
Older distributions such as CentOS6 come with python2.6, which causes build
failures in packages such as host-libglib2 because they require python2.7 and
above.

host-libglib2 will produce the error message:
/bin/sh: python2.7: command not found

Python2.7 is a hard-coded value in configure.ac. If one changes the value to
just "python," the following stack trace is produced:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "./gdbus-2.0/codegen/gdbus-codegen.in", line 55, in <module>
    self.outfile.write(LICENSE_STR.format(config.VERSION))
ValueError    : sys.exit(codegen_main.codegen_main())
zero length field name in format

Instead of supporting an ancient version of Python that had its support ended
in October os 2013, it would be more pragmatic only to support Python2.7 and
above.

Luckily; CentOS6 has the centos-release-scl repository, which allows users to
install python2.7, and Debian 8 comes with Python2.7 already, making this patch
relatively low impact.

72703d02b9 support/dependencies: check that PATH does not contain CWD
A person on IRC reported a build failure with the util-linux package,
looking like this:

for I in uname26 linux32 linux64 ; do \
	cd /home/aep/consulting/chargery/tracker/output/target/usr/bin && ln -sf setarch $I ; \
done
[...]
/bin/sh: line 1: ./ln: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error
/bin/sh: line 1: ./ln: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error
/bin/sh: line 1: ./ln: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error

The issue was an empty path in the PATH variable, which means "current
working directory", causing a "ln" binary built by util-linux for the
target to be used instead of the system-provided "ln".

We already check a number of things in the PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH
variables in support/dependencies/dependencies.sh, but we were not
checking that PATH did not contain an empty path.

This commit fixes that and takes this opportunity to simplify the test
code for PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

Although the UTF-8 locales in mainstream distributions all are suffixed
with just 'utf8', the nomenclature is a bit ambiguous with the way they

'UTF-8'.

Also, POSIX, ISO, and IEC do not enforce any specific suffix in LC_*
variables:

        language[_territory][.codeset]

it refers to an implementation-provided locale, where settings of

To avoid any confusion, use a regexp that is a bit more lax when
matching locales.

Also, quote the regexp, so that the '?' and '$' are not interpreted by
the shell.

8cde7e6af9 support/dependencies/dependencies.sh: check for Python argparse module
The script support/scripts/check-uniq-files uses the argparse Python
module. In most recent Python versions (starting with 2.7), the
argparse module is part of the standard library, and we already check
for the availability of Python in
support/dependencies/dependencies.sh.

However, when running on an ancient distribution with Python 2.6, the
argparse module is not part of the Python standard library, but
available as an external module. Without this module, the build fails,
because check-uniq-files, which is used in target-finalize, fails to
run.

To avoid this failure, this commit adds a check in
support/dependencies/dependencies.sh to verify that the argparse
module is available.

e09e1873a1 support/dependencies: ensure we have 'file' on the host
Recently, the autoconf macros for libtool started using '/usr/bin/file'
to determine the type of library that is generated by the toolchain.
Packages that use this recent version of the libtool autoconf macros
will fail in a rather dramatic way when /usr/bin/file is not present
on the host: the package will still build but no shared library is
generated, which in turn may cause build failures in other packages
that link with it.

For example, libpng's configure determines that it is not possible to
build a shared library on MIPS64 because the expected output from 'file'
is not present. Therefore, only a static libpng.a is built. Later,
bandwithd links with -lpng but it doesn't use the pkg-config's
Private-Libs (because it's not linking statically) and it doesn't have
access to the NEEDED reference from the shared library. Therefore, it
doesn't link with zlib and fails with

    pngrutil.c:(.text+0x55c): undefined reference to `inflate'

We cant use host-file because it is itself an autotools package and is
itself using libtool, so this would be a chicken-n-egg problem. Besides,
the libtool script really wants to call /usr/bin/file, so it would not
even find our host-file anyway.

So, just require that '/usr/bin/file' is present on the host.

40685f6a51 support/dependencies: use the new kconfig option to check UTF8 locale
Currently, we require a host with an UTF-8 locale as soone as we build a

However, glibc and musl do not require such a locale to be present.

514d7cab61 infra: do not append an empty LD_LIBRARY_PATH
When we set LD_LIBRARY_PATH when building our host tools, we append any
pre-existing value to our custom path:
        LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$(HOST_DIR)/usr/lib:$(LD_LIBRARY_PATH)"

But then if LD_LIBRARY_PATH was previously empty, we end up with an
LD_LIBRARY_PATH that ends with a colon.

Also, when we check that an existing LD_LIBRARY_PATH does not contain
CWD, we previously did not look for a zero-length prefix.

Since 'man ld.so' says of LD_LIBRARY_PATH:
A colon-separated list of directories in which to search for ELF
libraries at execution-time. Similar to the PATH environment
    variable.

And POSIX states about PATH:
A zero-length prefix is a legacy feature that indicates the current
    working directory.

And bash also recognises a zero-length prefix to search in CWD:
A zero-length (null) directory name in the value of PATH indicates
    the current directory.

We may thus end up on a system where a zero-length prefix in
LD_LIBRARY_PATH is interpreted as CWD.

Do not append the previous LD_LIBRARY_PATH if it was empty, and check
for a zero-length prefix when checking dependencies.

7fa43f911b dependencies: Reject gcj in BR2_NEEDS_HOST_JAVA check
Xbmc uses the Groovy java package to generate API code, for details see
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Codegeneration#How_it_works

Groovy itself is broken when used with gcj:
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GROOVY-3701

Xbmc recommends to use another java package instead, like openjdk:
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=199742

Until we come up with a host package to provide a java setup and
in order to make autobuilder happy let´s reject gcj when we check
for a java installation on the host.

Currently Xbmc is the only package using BR2_NEEDS_HOST_JAVA
so changing the behaviour of dependencies.sh has no side effects.
