Now when new shiny tools are released by Synopsys we're ready for version
update in Buildroot.
Important change in this release is switching to combined "binutils-gdb" repo
in accordance to upstream move.
Following patch now is a part of the most recent relese:

xscreensaver doesn't build with (e)glibc toolchain when gettext package is
selected.
With (e)glibc libintl is provided by the libc whereas with uClibc it's provided
by gettext.
If "LIBS=-lintl" is removed from XSCREENSAVER_CONF_ENV, then the -lintl is
missing during xscreensaver build if the toolchain needs gettext.

undefined reference to `libintl_textdomain'
Backport a patch applied in 5.28 that fix linking issue with intl and remove
"LIBS=-lintl" from XSCREENSAVER_CONF_ENV.

set due to dependencies on libgtk2 and libglib2.

The help entry for the i965 DRI driver states that it supports alll
Intel GPUs. That's not true, as at least the i915 series is not handled
by this driver, but by a separate one.
Fix the help text accordingly; remove the useless second part of the
help text (which does not mean much for Buildroot.)

The original aim of this patch was to fix static linking of
btrfs-progs. In order to implement this in the form of patches that
can potentially be upstreamed, this patch first bumps the btrfs-progs
package to the latest upstream stable version. It then:
- Reworks the existing documentation disabling patch in a form that
can potentially be upstreamed.
- Adds a patch to support static building of the btrfs-progs
binaries.

lftp configure.ac uses PKG_CHECK_MODULES, so it must have host-pkgconf

By default, automake does "dependency tracking", which allows the
generated Makefile to contain the necessary dependencies to
automatically rebuild the appropriate C files when included header
files are changed. This dependency tracking is nice when doing active
development on the package, but not really useful when doing a
one-time build of the package. According to automake's
documentation[1], disabling the dependency tracking provides a small
speed-up.
In some very unscientific measurements (i.e repeated only once), we
have noticed a ~3.6% reduction of the total build time of a Buildroot
toolchain after applying this patch.

The dl_iterate_phdr() C library function on Blackfin returns a
non-conventional structure format compared to other architectures,
which makes Ruby unable to use it. Since it's just an optional feature
of Ruby apparently used to generate more fancy backtraces, this commit
simply disables the usage of dl_iterate_phdr() on this architecture.

No matter what you do, the Ruby build system wants to use shared
libraries for the encoding modules. Therefore, this commit disallows

On Blackfin FLAT, stripping does not exist, but recent U-Boot versions
nonetheless try to strip and fail if they cannot do so. This commit
adds a U-Boot patch (submitted upstream) that solves this issue.

perl-gd doesn't build on gcc10 due to the host Perl being a bit
old. This shows a defiency in the perl package infrastructure, which
is being worked on. However, since it won't be solved before 2014.08,
our only solution for now is to mark perl-gd as broken, as well as its
reverse dependency perl-gdgraph.

Since cset 54456cc (infra: consistently use double dollar signs...), it
is no longer possible to download versions with a slash in it, because
the _DL_VERSION variable is second-expanded, but the _VERSION variable
is immediately-expanded to have '/' substitued with '_'.
So, _DL_VERSION is only expanded at the time it is evaluated, and by
that time, we've lost the slashes in _VERSION.
Make the _DL_VERSION variables immediately-evaluated.

By default (i.e. without adding libgomp.so* to
BR2_TOOLCHAIN_EXTRA_EXTERNAL_LIBS), if an external toolchain with libgomp
support is used, then libgomp is installed to staging/ , but not to target/ .
Consequently, with such a toolchain, imagemagick's configure detected libgomp as
supported and enabled its usage for the build stage, but then it failed to run
on the target because libgomp was missing. This is the bug #7322.
Disable OpenMP for imagemagick as a temporary workaround, until a better long
term solution is agreed on and implemented.

The ecryptfs-utils package requires the 'gettext' program, which is
provided by the gettext package, to get translated strings. This is
needed regardless of whether the toolchain uses glibc or uClibc.
This issue was reported by 'ausjke' on IRC.

Until now, we thought that gettext was only needed for the target for
uClibc toolchains, to provide the gettext functions that are normally
provided directly by glibc.
However, the gettext runtime actually does more than providing the
equivalent of those C library functions: it also provides certain
command line tools, like 'gettext' to get translated strings from the
shell. This tool is for example used by certain ecryptfs-utils scripts
to get translated strings. It is therefore necessary to be able to
build the gettext package even for glibc toolchains.

Following the introduction of the support for the musl C library, the
support of C++ exceptions or features like pthread_exit() got broken
even with other libraries such as glibc. This was reported as bug #7028.
The problem was caused by the gcc patch needed to add support for

When ELF binaries and shared libraries are used, the internal
functions of libnftnl such as xfree() are not visible to the outside
world (their visibility is 'hidden'). Therefore, the fact that other
programs (especially nftables) may have symbols with the same name
does not cause any problem.
However, when doing static linking on a non-ELF platform (such as
Blackfin, which uses the FLAT binary format), there is no way of
encoding this visibility. Therefore, the xfree() symbols of libnftnl
becomes visible to the outside world, causing a conflict with the
xfree() symbol defined by nftables.
To solve this, this patch renames the libnftnl xfree() function to
libnftnl_xfree().
This commit fixes a problem seen after building nftables statically on
Blackfin. This problem was seen after the previous patch fixing the
autobuilder failure:

When linking against readline, it forgets to link against ncurses,
which is needed by readline. Fix this by passing LIBS="-lcurses" to
the configure script.

Currently, pkg-utils.mk (included via package/Makefile.in) is only included
when a configuration file already exists. This means that none of the
utilities it defines are available without .config.
In particular:
- the MESSAGE macro, causing pretty build output. Since some make targets
can be run even without .config, like 'make manual', not having this
pretty printing is odd.
- pkgname, pkgdir: in a subsequent patch, these functions will be used for
the generation of the manual, and since this should work also without
.config, we need these functions to be available.
This patch moves the include of pkg-utils.mk from package/Makefile.in to
Makefile, outside of the check for .config.
This is a quick fix. The full solution involves to minimize the amount of
Makefile code that is guarded by a check on .config. This approach will be
taken in the 2014.11 release cycle.

As reported in https://bugs.busybox.net/show_bug.cgi?id=7286,
systemd fails to build with BR2_OPTIMIZE_2=y. This mode activates the GCC
options -flto and -ffat-lto-objects, which do not mix well with the GCC
tricks used in src/compat-libs/linkwarning.h to build the compatibility
libraries.
As a temporary workaround, this patch disables link time optimization for
systemd.

gnupg2 needs a toolchain with locale support or a package which provides
a suitable iconv implementation (libiconv). Otherwise it will fail at
the configure phase with an error like this one:

On fedora 20 64bits host, the file /usr/share/config.site contains
a fix for installing libraries into /lib/lib64 on 64bits systems
that redefine libdir in the generated Makefile.
This causes the bug 7262 reported Normen Bolling.
Set CONFIG_SITE to "no" to not use config.site

Commit 93917b6980 (2013.11) introduced
the installation of the binary .qm translation files, unconditionally.
However, the installed size is very large for some embedded systems
(about 8 MB), and they are not needed in many cases.
In order to avoid such a waste of storage space, commit
2ff329412f (2014.08) made this
installation an option that could be disabled. For backward
compatibility, the option default was set to yes.
Given the size of these files, and that they had never been installed
by Buildroot versions before 2013.11, change the default to not
installing them.
Interested users can still activate it as needed.
Also update and improve the help text.

Erlang/OTP 17.1 is a service release on the 17 track with mostly bug
fixes, but it does contain a number of new features and characteristics
improvements as well.
Some highlights of the release are:
- crypto: Add aes_cfb8 cypher to crypto:block_encrypt and block_decrypt.
- diameter: Add result code counters for CEA, DWA, and DPA.
- erts: The following built in functions in the erlang and binary modules
now bump an appropriate amount of reductions and yield when out of
reductions:
binary_to_list/1, binary_to_list/3, bitstring_to_list/1,
list_to_binary/1,
iolist_to_binary/1, list_to_bitstring/1, binary:list_to_bin/1
- hipe: Handle Maps instructions get_map_elements, put_map_assoc,
put_map_exact in the HiPE native code compiler.
- mnesia: The time for inserting locks for a transaction with large
number of locks is reduced significantly.
- ssh: Option max_sessions added to ssh:daemon/{2,3}.
- stdlib: Add maps:get/3 to maps module. The function will return the
supplied default value if the key does not exist in the map.

relation to libpng are caused by the usage of -L/usr/lib
-L/usr/local/lib in the compiler flags, which leads the configure
script to try to link against a host libpng library."
These issues are fixed by:
* Version bump to -r08
"[patched] the configure.ac script to remove the hardcoded
-L/usr/local/lib and -I/usr/local/include. The bandwidthd package
-was already autoreconfigured, so there is no need to add it."
* "Adding the --without-x option, which ensures that the configure.ac

The gatttool utility uses readline, and is therefore built only if
--enable-client is used, i.e when bluez5_utils client applications are
enabled. Therefore, this commit makes
BR2_PACKAGE_BLUEZ5_UTILS_GATTTOOL depend on
BR2_PACKAGE_BLUEZ5_UTILS_CLIENT. It also moves
BR2_PACKAGE_BLUEZ5_UTILS_GATTTOOL to be right below the
BR2_PACKAGE_BLUEZ5_UTILS_CLIENT definition.

Use the official _BSD_SOURCE feature test macro instead of the meaningless
HAVE_STRSEP macro in order to detect the availability of strsep().
This allows toolchains supporting strsep() to use it instead of the custom

causes the .config file to be updated. Thus, the .config file is more recent
than our stamp file .stamp_kconfig_fixup_done. On a subsequent build, our
dependency rules would kick in, and run the config fixup again, thus
kicking in the package's configure, build and install steps yet once
more, that, ad infinitum.
One solution is to modify kconfig-package to introduce an explicit touch of
the .kconfig_fixup_config_done stamp file, as post-configure hook.
Another solution, implemented by this patch, is to move the oldconfig call
from the package's .mk file to the kconfig-package infrastructure and make
sure it is done as part of the fixup commands. This way, the stamp file will
only be touched once, after the full fixup (including oldconfig) and no
endless rebuilds will occur.

There are several packages that have a configuration file managed by
kconfig: uclibc, busybox, linux and barebox. All these packages need some
make targets to handle the kconfig specificities: creating a configuration
(menuconfig, ...) and saving it back (update-config, ...)
These targets should be the same for each of these packages, but
unfortunately they are not. Especially with respect to saving back the
configuration to the original config file, there are many differences.
A previous set of patches fixed these targets for the uclibc package.
This patch extracts these targets into a common kconfig-package
infrastructure, with the goals of:
- aligning the behavior of all kconfig-based packages
- removing code duplication
In order to use this infrastructure, a package should at a minimum specify
FOO_KCONFIG_FILE and eval the kconfig-package macro. The supported
configuration editors can be set with FOO_KCONFIG_EDITORS and defaults to
menuconfig only.
Additionally, a package can specify FOO_KCONFIG_OPT for extra options to
pass to the invocation of the kconfig editors, and FOO_KCONFIG_FIXUP_CMDS
for a list of shell commands used to fixup the .config file after a
configuration has been created/edited.

The uclibc-menuconfig command is currently run based on the user-specified
config file, while the fixup of the config file is done afterwards.
However, it makes more sense to do an initial fixup _before_ running
menuconfig, so that the options presented to the user are consistent with
the final configuration.
This patch changes the dependency of the menuconfig target from .config to
.stamp_config_fixup_done to achieve this.

GCC has several builtin functions that implement atomic operations. Those
functions are architecture specific and may not be implemented by the
specific toolchain. In case of GCC for ARC those functions rely on
LLOCK/SCOND instructions which are optional in ARC CPU's. If ARC CPU doesn't
support those instructions but software tries to use them, then application
will be aborted with Illegal instruction exception. To avoid confusion user
should first specify that their CPU supports atomic extension, which will
allow selection of packages that use builtin atomic functions.

Since openssh-6.0, the ssh-keygen app has supported a -A option,
which creates any missing keys. This frees us of having to add
new ssh-keygen invocations as new key types are introduced. This
also frees us of having to know the default key names and locations.
So this patch replaces all the the init.d script invocations with
a single "ssh-keygen -A" call.
Note: the systemd service script *already* uses this option.

Commit 93917b6980 introduced the
installation of the binary .qm translation files, unconditionally.
This patch introduces an option to disable this behavior, saving
almost 8MB of space.

This patch adds Bluez 5.x. Its API is not backwards compatible with
BlueZ 4 so it is packaged separately from BlueZ 4.
BlueZ utils will use systemd and/or udev if enabled. It contains a
hook to install the GATT support tool, which is always built but not
installed by default.

In some situations, users may want to tweak the dynamic section of the
binaries (for example to add/set the RPATH to $ORIGIN/../lib).
Because it is not trivial to do it properly from the Buildroot
infrastructure, allow those users to use patchelf (e.g. from a
post-build script) to tweak binaries.
patchelf is able to:
- modify an existing DT_RUNPATH tags
- add a DT_RUNPATH tag if not already present
- do the above to the DT_RPATH tag, too
- set the path to the interpreter
- remove DT_NEEDED tags
- query a binary for the DT_RUNPATH/DT_RPATH tag, or for the
interpreter path
Does not really fix#7172, but this is an appropriate workaround.

Since the trailing slash is stripped from $($(PKG)_SITE) by pkg-generic.mk:

so it is redundant.

In commit 79c31e3297 ("package/libevdev:
add dependency on host-python"), Yann added a dependency of libevdev
on host-python, because the Python script in evdev was using argparse
which is only available since Python 2.6. At the time, this was
causing failures on machines that were using Python versions older
than 2.6.
However, since Yann's patch, the libevdev version has been bumped. And
one of the upstream commit,
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libevdev/commit/libevdev/?id=cea8f0b8cc86332b0643acd62f24f9fef2ecc153,
was precisely made to remove the argparse dependency to avoid the
need to have a >= 2.6 Python version.
Thanks to this, we can avoid the host-python dependency and rely on
the system-installed Python version instead.

Apparently LIBS (environment) isn't pushed to LIBS (autoconf) for the
tests, hence when static linking openssl it misses libz and assumes some
basic digests required for ecdsa support are missing, which is false. Fixes:

Disable shared build for host-gcc-final when building for static targets.
We really want static or shared, there's no such thing as "preferring static"
since we can't choose with any degree of granularity for which packages.
And it confuses linking scripts having both available at the same time. Fixes:

We were already removing the preloadable iconv library (that can be
used through LD_PRELOAD to override the C library iconv
implementation) from staging/target, but it was still built. And this
causes issues in static only scenarios, so this patch changes that to
not even build/install the preloadable library.

If Binutils and/or GDB are fetched from the unified binutils-gdb
repository, then the tarball will contain both Binutils and GDB
sources, unlike the "normal" tarballs that contain only the titular
package. To keep packages separated in Buildroot we need to disable
undesired components when configuring.
Binutils and GDB migrated to a common Git repository in the October
2013 [1]. Previous Git repositories were incomplete copies of CVS
repository which copied only the relevant files (no binutils files in
GDB, and vice versa). In the new binutils-gdb repository there is no
such separation and a result all files exist in directory after
checkout. So if "configure" and "make" are used without explicit
targets, all projects will be built: binutils, ld, gas, bfd, opcodes,
gdb, etc. In case of Buildroot this would mean that selecting Binutils
only, still will build both Binutils and GDB. And if GDB is selected
as well, then both packages will be built two times, and Binutils from
GDB directory will overwrite initial build of Binutils (or vice versa
if Binutils will be built after the GDB). This is a serious problem,
because binutils and GDB use separate branches in this common
repository. In case of Buildroot this means that separate Git commits
(or tags) should be used when downloading source from Git.
This affects only Git repositories, because GNU release tarballs still
contain only relevant packages.
This change is backward compatible, because if "normal" tarball is
used (without extra directories), than --disable-* configure options
are just ignored by configure.

In its turn this behavior confuses configure script of openssh so some options
get set improperly. In particular "strnvis" gets determined as existing which
causes failure during compilation:

When flex is built for the target without installing the
flex binary, a flex++ symlink installed by flex's Makefile
points to the missing flex executable. This mod adds
a post target install hook to remove the broken symlink.

There is no real reason to run uclibc-menuconfig in non-parallel mode,
even though one can neither expect performance benefits from a parallel
menuconfig.
Nevertheless, $(MAKE) is the default, so this patch removes the unnecessary
non-default $(MAKE1) usage for uclibc-menuconfig.
This is a simplification introduced in preparation of the kconfig-package
infrastructure.

In the sequence:
make uclibc-menuconfig
make uclibc-update-config
the freshly configured settings from the menuconfig are lost during the
update-config step. This is because update-config depends on the configure
step, which starts by copying the config file to the build directory.
Instead, stop depending on the configure step from update-config, and
introduce a new stamp file .stamp_config_fixup_done, which applies any
fixups on the .config file.
An alternative solution would be to add a call to UCLIBC_FIXUP_DOT_CONFIG to
the relevant targets instead of depending on a new stamp file. The advantage
of the stamp file, though, is that we avoid redoing the fixup unnecessarily.
Moreover, in the light of the plan to extract the kconfig-specific bits into
a separate kconfig-package infrastructure, the stamp file rules are more
easily moved into such an infrastructure, while the alternative solution
requires the package .mk file to explicitly call the FIXUP rules which may
more easily be forgotten.
No longer depending on the configure step has the added bonus that
'uclibc-update-config' no longer needs the toolchain to be available, which
makes:
make clean uclibc-menuconfig uclibc-update-config
much faster and user-friendly.
Additionally, make sure that 'make clean uclibc-update-config' works
properly, by depending on .stamp_config_fixup_done so that the config file
is present and fixed.

When executing the sequence 'make clean uclibc-menuconfig', the configured
config file is not taken into account and one starts from the default
settings.
This patch adds an explicit target for the config file and lets the
configure and menuconfig steps depend on it, fixing the problem.

In a subsequent patch, the behavior of UCLIBC_SETUP_DOT_CONFIG will change

And the simplest solution is to build tests right before installation in
UCLIBC_INSTALL_TARGET_CMDS which follows UCLIBC_INSTALL_STAGING_CMDS so
all required libs are in place.
Interesting note - if one enables uClibc tests after initial full buildroot
build mentioned errors don't happen. This is because uClibc libc libs are
already installed to staging. That's why I didn't noticed this problem before.

While updating the default config for Sparc, I noticed that networking
is broken. The reason is a uClibc backport patch from uClibc
master. This commit adds a fix on top of it, which was submitted to
upstream uClibc.

The current popt build system tests the existence of <glob.h>, and
then assumes that if __GLIBC__ is defined, then glob_pattern_p() must
be available. Unfortunately, that's not true with uClibc: <glob.h> may
be installed, but not necessarily the GNU glob extensions... and
uClibc defines __GLIBC__. This is causing build issues with certain
uClibc toolchains that do not have GNU glob extensions enabled.
To fix this, we introduce a patch called popt-03-glob-detection.patch
which adds a new AC_CHECK_FUNCS() test for glob_pattern_p() and uses
the result to know if this function is available, instead of testing
__GLIBC__.
In order for this patch to work, the popt package must be
autoreconfigured, so another patch, popt-02-fix-autoreconf.patch, is
needed to make the package autoreconfigure properly. And also
POPT_AUTORECONF = YES is added to popt.mk.
Finally, this change avoids the need for the Blackfin toolchain
specific testing, which we forgot to update when introducing the
2014R1 version of the Blackfin toolchain. With this new solution,
there will be no need to update the popt.mk file when new Blackfin
toolchains are added.

flickcurl does not specifically need openssl: it needs libcurl to have
crypto support to access https:// URLs. So, instead of depending on
openssl in FLICKCURL_DEPENDENCIES, this commit simply leaves it to the
Config.in file to select either OpenSSL, gnutls or libnss to make sure
libcurl will use one of these libraries.

openssl is more widely used than gnutls. Other packages prefer openssl
over gnutls and would like to do the select in the opposite direction.
So switch lftp to use openssl by default, and only revert to using
gnutls if explicitly selected by the user.
