Run the emulation with:

 qemu-system-mips -M malta -cpu mips32r6-generic -kernel output/images/vmlinux -drive file=output/images/rootfs.ext2,format=raw -append "rootwait root=/dev/sda" -nographic # qemu_mips32r6_malta_defconfig

The login prompt will appear in the terminal that started Qemu.

board/qemu/mips*-malta: switch from IDE disk to SCSI disk A following patch will switch to the kernel 5.15 for all qemu defconfigs but the IDE support (used by mips malta) has been removed from the Linux kernel since 5.14 release [1]. Enable the SCSI support and update the kernel command line.
